Trying to Get Pregnant

New at TTC

Hi all. It's another newbie to the board. I've been lurking the past week or two (and thankfully discovered the useful Bump Board Glossary!) and just wanted to share my situation and questions and wonder if any of you have had the same experiences.

DH and I started actively TTC this month. Also, this month, I finally decided to have my thyroid tested after about a year of speculation and was dx with hypothyroidism (TSH 4.59) and started taking levothyroxine (half of 25mcg pill daily) about a week ago. Also while getting my TSH test results, my PCP had me PIAC which showed I was not PG. I'm not officially charting yet (don't want to stress over it too much yet) but due to the timing of my cycle, I would not have O yet, so I'm not too concerned over the BFN. DH and I do the BD about every other day for the last 2-3 weeks (after AF's last visit).

Here are my questions:

1. Anyone else have mild hypothyroidism while also TTC? I'd like to hear some positive stories in general about managing your thyroid as I've been reading a lot of scary stories about weight gain, hair loss, TTC, etc online after starting the medication. Also, is it still possible to O with hypo?

2. The last 2-3 times after the BD (most recent time being this morning), I've had some light spotting, pink/redish swirly, that I notice when I wipe after I pee, but it only lasts less than a day. We are doing the BD more often than we had, but nothing rough or otherwise out of the ordinary, and it seems like it's only been happening since I started taking levo. According to my Bump ticker in my siggy (which I've read is crap), I have O by now, so at what point could this be considered implantation bleeding? My thought is that I can correlate it to BD that it is not implantation and is just spotting. Has anyone else experienced this, and are there any differences between spotting after BD and implantation?

If AF doesn't arrive, I'll try a HPT within the next week or so, but until then I'm very curious. TIA for sharing any of your experiences.

Re: New at TTC

  • I'm sorry I cannot help with the first question.

Yes thebump ticker is useless.  If you are interested in charting, check out Fertility Friend.  They have tickers, but they are based on your cycle.

The spotting could be ovulation spotting, it could be from sex, or it could be implantation spotting.  However implantation spotting is rare, and you can only guess that is what it was if you knew which DPO you were when it started (if it was around implantation time) and then get a +HPT.   I would guess that it is from ovulation or sex.

    Lots of luck to you!

  • Welcome!! And yay for TTC time! To answer your Qs:

    (1) I was dx with hypothyroidism in 2006. I also take levothyroxine and have not had any issues. In fact, it helped my energy level tremendously. However, you should know that it can take up to 6 months for the medication to adjust your levels to where they need to be, so don't expect any major differences in your TSH level for a while. My IF issue is not related to hypothyroidism but I have read it can affect Prolactin levels, which then can hinder conception. Not saying this would happen to you, just something to pass along.

    (2) Were you taking BCP or had IUD before you started TTC? Just curious as bc methods can make your cycle a off for a while and perhaps that is the spotting you are seeing.

    GL to ya!

  • My girlfriend went to the Dr yesterday for the same: bleeding after sex. Like you said, she noticed it more on the toilet paper. However, any bleeding outside of normal AF is 'not normal'. No need to worry, just need to get it checked out! Her Dr is running some tests, and put her on antibiotics for a possible yeast infection, although she is not showing typical signs. GL!
  • I stopped BCP about 8 months ago and let DH deal with the BC issue from then until this month in anticipation of TTC. Though about 2 months ago I was put on antiboitics for a UTI and since then my cycle has been off a little - went from 28 day cycles regularly to 35 days, then 31 days my last two cycles. My annual appointment with my GYN is in about a month from now, so if no BFP before then, and if I'm still seeing spotting, I'll have her check it out. Thanks!
