potty train with little potty or big toilet?

DD is pretty predictable with some poops, so I am going to start at least sitting her on the toilet for the ones I know are coming :-)

I wanted to get a little potty, but read that the transition from the little potty to big toilet can be just as much work as the potty training........is this true?

How did you do it and would you do it that way again? Thanks ladies!

Re: potty train with little potty or big toilet?

  • We used both.  At one point, we had three small potties in addition to the big potty, so DD never had to go more than a few steps to find one.  Now we've taken away the small potties on the first floor where the bathroom is, and only have one in her bedroom next to her bed for nap and night time.  I would do the big potty for when you know it is coming, or for regular intervals (sitting once every hour to try), and have a little potty or two as well so she can have more control to try going herself (climbing on a stool and setting up a smaller seat on the big potty takes some practice for a LO, where the little potties are very accessible).

  • We're potty training with just the big toilet (currently). I don't want to hassle with another transition, and I think the little potties are gross. I do see how they might be more convenient since my son had to figure out how to step onto the stool and scoot his bottom back on the potty insert before he goes. It took a little bit (he's really short!), but he's got it just fine. I figure it will help with him being comfortable going potty on the toilet when we're in public, too. Good luck!
  • After having used both with my first child, I plan to just use the big potty this time. The little potty chair was just too disgusting and with the new toilet seats you can buy at Home Depot that have a little seat that tucks into the big seat I don't really see a need for a potty chair. My son transitioned to the big potty so fast he barely used it anyway and I'm very glad for that. I think the only reason I'll keep the potty chair is to have handy in the back of my SUV for those emergencies when a decent bathroom is nowhere to be found. And BTW, I highly recommend this! Especially if you're potty training with two children. Its so difficult to hold a baby and help a toddler go potty or try to explain to a potty training toddler that he has to wait in line to use the bathroom when you're at a busy public place.

  • We are trying with the big potty, with a little ring on it.. but its not going so well. I think im going to try to get a little one.. Whats the harm? Although ill still be cleaning up poop and pee.. just out of a little potty instead of a diaper.

  • we are currently on the 2nd day of the three day pting and i am training on the little potty. I wish i would have done the big potty because when we start going out into public, i dont know how he is going to react. But its a lot easier for DS to go on the little potty!

  • We used both and never had an issue.  She only uses the small potty in her bedroom now if she has to get up in the middle of the night. Otherwise she uses a big potty without the ring at home, and with the ring out in public restrooms.
