This is my first month of temping and all those open circles are leading me to believe I'm not doing it right. I did miss one day right before my temps went up, but besides that I don't feel like I've screwed up any of the other days.
No. I don't wake up at the same time everyday. My husband wakes me up when he leaves for work and then I usually go back to "sleep" until my son wakes up. Sometimes I sleep again, sometimes I don't. Sometimes it's an hour until my son wakes up, sometimes it's three. I've been taking my temps when my husband wakes me up because I usually go to the bathroom then, but it's not always the same time.
Open circles come from not temping at the same time every morning. Try to temp within a 1/2hr of when you normally temp and you shouldn't see open circles anymore. Setting an alarm can really help with this!

I was thinking of setting an alarm to temp. I'll probably have to set it pretty early so I don't get disturbed by DH or DS, but it'll be worth it to have a nice looking chart.

I set my alarm for 4 AM and I wake up for the day at 6AM. DH was taking the dog out around 4 AM waking me up everytime that I finally decided to just temp then. It's annoying, but it is worth it. Plus, it only takes 2 minutes and then I am back to sleep. Good luck!

Personally, I wake 1-4 times a night and temp each time. As a result, I average all the temps overnight and use the average temp for my chart.
You can see that FF is still easily able to show a thermal shift and my temps are not as rocky as they were before I did this.
ETA: My Feb 2011 chart is a BAD example. It was a bad first two weeks on that chart (hospital visits, sick / fever, etc)
ETA again: The other option I used to do was still temp every time I woke up and take the temp with the longest amount of sleep behind it. The temps were taken at different times but still clearly showed a temp shift. I also use CM and OPKs to help FF decide.
