Pregnant after IF

Constipation (maybe TMI)

Ok so here is a little background. I suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (lovely I know) so constipation has always been with me. But now that I am pregnant (not even 5 weeks yet for pete's sake) it has gotten way worse. I talked to my the nurses at my RE today and they said something about some type of stool softeners. I have not bought stool softeners before so I am unsure of which type to get. I don't drink caffeine because it aggravates my IBS. Do any of you use stool softeners, if so which brand should I get? Also if you have any other suggestions on how to lessen this issue before it gets worse I would greatly appreciate it. I have gained 3 lbs already from bloating and constipation I am sure because my appetite has actually diminished. TIA for any advice you can give!

Re: Constipation (maybe TMI)

  • I had a lot of constipation from the medication zofran. My suggestion is to get a stool softener. It doesn't matter which one...my doctor told me you can just get the cvs brand or Colace.

In addition, keep hydrated. Drink a lot of water. It does help. Also, if you can add some extra fiber to your diet, then that will help, too. I just would eat a fiber bar once a day to get some extra fiber in. Nothing was THE magic cure for me, but it all helped.

  • I used generic colace, drank 3 glasses of miralax a day, ate prunes, drank fiber, ate lots of veggie rich salads, and still had problems. I would take a couple colace, and if you don't get results in a day or 2 start on the miralax. My RE told 3 glasses of miralax until you go. After you go, I would keep taking colace at night to prevent it from getting so backed up again. I would also invest in some hemmorhoid cream for after you sh!t out 3 lbs of poo.

  • I eat one of those 60 calorie packets of prunes every day and haven't been constipated at all.  I've been more regular during pregnancy than any other time in my life and I credit it to the prunes.  You might want to give it a shot.

  • I definitely agree with the prunes and the colace.  My PNV has a stool softener in it, but it is not enough for me.  I eat a Fiber One bar each day as well.  I still get a bit constipated, but it is much better now.  Best of luck!

  • Colace is what my RE said to take.  And Milk of Magnesia.  Are you on PIO?  That always gave me trouble.  Also, the pain meds from the ER - those can cause constipation.  I also try to increase my fiber intake with Fiber One bars.

    Congrats and good luck!

  • I have a form of IBS too and actually had the opposite problem during my first trimester.  Halfway through the 2nd trimester my good luck vanished. haha  Colace is a stool softener that is on my little list of safe meds my doctor gave me to keep in my wallet.
