Video recommendations for sensitive kids?

I have a 3.5 yo boy who is very sensitive to anything being loud or scary.  We have NEVER been able to get through a disney movie with the exception of Mary Poppins, and most videos I get a "turn it off mommy it's scary"--he seems particularly sensitive to angry expressions/yelling, etc.  He watches Mr. Rogers (our PBS shows it once a week) and does well with that, but really not much else--even stuff made for toddlers seems to overwhelm at times.  Normally this is fine--we're not much of a TV family--and he only watches about 30-60 minutes of TV a week, and we're happy with that.  However, we're going on a long trip, and I'm hoping to have videos as a backup if it gets too long/squirmy, etc.  Any suggestions from those who might have similar kids?  Ideally, I like to get videos at the library, but I'm also open to downloads or purchase.

Thanks in advance!

  • There are some great videos of kids singing- my mom had one called KidSongs and we used to have a Christian based one of kids singing & doing fun things to Christian songs.  I'm sure there's a ton out there & they wouldn't be scary in the least.  Also you might try audio CD's so he can listen to stories.

  • Have you tried any of the other PBS programming?  WordWorld, Clifford, Arthur
  • This is/was the age when mine went nutso over Super Why.

It's PBS, educational, and we have a couple of the DVD's.

You may be able to find them from the library and/or they're cheap on ebay.

And.. I feel for you.  My oldest STILL gets fairly freaked out at intense scenes in movies.

The conveyor belt scene in Toy Story 2 had him physically shaking and yelling "NOOOO!" at the screen in the movie theater.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

DD is that way.  Caillou and Little Bill are kids' shows that are great options.  Very soothing and calming and relatable.  Willing to bet your local library has some to check out.  Little Bill is on Nick Jr and Caillou is on PBS.  Blue's Clues might be another good option.  Winnie the Pooh might be a good movie option as well if you skip the elephant scene.

ETA:  Also, Veggie Tales are pretty calm generally (read the descriptions but the princess one is safe though the Esther story is a snoozer but the other two are adorable).  I heard Milo & Otis is okay.  Also, the original Tinker Bell movie (the lost treasure one has a scary scene with rats but this one is fine).  Both my kids love Elmo Holiday Movie and the Calliou holiday movie.

  • Elmo, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Max & Ruby.
  • My DS primary watches PBS and rentals from the library.  His current favorite is the Mysteries of Busytown, which I don't think is scary at all.  He likes SuperWhy, Bob the Builder, Thomas, Cat in the Hat, Curious George, etc.

  • DS loves Winnie the Pooh.  We have the old VHS ones, as we've never found them on DVD.  He also likes the PBS shows that have been mentioned.  He's also recently gotten into Blue's Clues.
  • My sensitive boy used to love Sesame Street.  He now enjoys Dinosaur Train, about a family of dinosaurs who ride a train to meet other dinos.  Caillou is a big favorite and we enjoy the parents on the show.  We borrowed an Elmo movie based on Peter and the Wolf when he was little that he really liked but he probably would be scared by the wolf scenes now.  He loved the music scenes and meeting the players at the symphony.  He will ask us to skip any episode or book of something he normally likes if he thinks it's scary or dark or dangerous and hasn't seen any movies at all as a result.  Somehow we manage with just the bits he will watch for road trips.
  • A really great one is the Leap Frog Letter Factory.  It's fun and upbeat and now my kiddo who had zero interest in learning his letters is obssessed with all things letters.  Both of my kids love it and will watch it at least twice in a row on a car trip.  Someone above suggested Max and Ruby, I'd skip that one.  It is super cute and pretty upbeat but Max does have some toys that he loves to startle Ruby with and I think your kiddo would get upset by it.

WorldWorld is another PBS one that is great and I'm pretty positive that there is no anger or scaring people in there.

  • The only not scary disney movie my daughter loved at the age of 2 was The Arisocats(sp?).  Not too scary at all.

  • This is a great question!  My 3yo is very sensitive too.  He likes pretty much anything on PBS, including SuperWhy, Curious George, and he LOVES Yo Gabba Gabba on Nick Jr (although we recently cut cable, so we now watch YGG on DVD).
