XP: Favorite Toys for a 2 year old?

DS is approaching his 2nd birthday and I feel like he's getting bored and outgrowing all his current toys.  Can you recommend some good new toys for us?  I want educational toys... not just something that he pushes a button and it makes noise.

Thank you!

Anything by V-Tech. My son also loved large color, number, shape puzzles.

My 2 year old loves playdoh and paint and anything he can manipulate - pipecleaners, easter eggs, slinkies, locks and latches puzzle. He also loves his kitchen and cutting his Melissa & Doug food set. He will pretend play for an hour or two, sometimes he's driving a car and Mr. Potato Head takes a turn driving, sometimes he's driving a boat and he runs out of gas on the water. He will pretend play longer than any other activity (playdoh is a close second). We don't buy any battery opperated toys though we have a few that have been gifts - he never plays longer than a few minutes with them.

I recommend encouraging him to pretend play, pretend that objects are something else - like a basket is a swimming pool and the farm animals are going to drive the bus (shoebox) to the store (baseball cap) and buy some waters and sunglasses before they get to the pool. I did this a few times with my son and he will do it on his own now. It's so much fun to watch him dream up something I could never imagine.

Oh sorry, as far as a gift goes...we didn't get anything for our son specifically for his birthday because I couldn't wait to give it to him but he got an activity table (I liked the one from Pottery Barn but it was out of our price range so we bought it off craigslist for $150) and we got him a wood Kidcraft Kitchen ($75, also from craigslist but you can pick one up new for $200).

Oh, I'm not thinking about gifts.  I'm just thinking in general.  I don't want to wait until October to buy him more toys.  Smile

  • My son loves his Woldorf nesting puzzles.  Look into Montessori toys online.  They are costly, but worth it.
  • The Lego Duplos. The Cars or Toy Story ones have been a huge hit in our house. I really couldn't even count the number of hours that he spends playing with them.

  • Thomas the train, they are expensive, but DS plays with his everyday for hours.  He also loves throwing/kicking balls.

  • Lego Duplos but he only likes the Legos cars and people mostly.

Matchbox cars (he will line them up all over the couch and drive them on our coffee table.)  We sort them by colors and size and race them.
