3rd Trimester

Period ? TMI

This is for all the 2nd time or more moms.  Could anybody tell me how long after giving birth does a woman bleed for? Do you simply get a regular period ie lasting a week with moderate to heavy flow? Or, do you bleed for longer and is it more bloody then normal? Any info would be appreciated TIA.

    It varies woman to woman.

I was really lucky after DD was born. I bled quite a bit in the hospital, but by day 3 when we left I went to church that night in white pants. The first week was like a normal period, then tapered off and I was done bleeding by week 2. Some ladies bleed much longer.

  • Thanks for the info.  Coulod you or anyone answer this, does the bleeding end sooner or isn't as heavy if you are breastfeeding or that doesn't effect it at all?

When you breast feed, it helps your uterus contract. I would assume it helps stop the bleeding sooner, but again, it's different for everyone.

    I was BF.

Edit: Here's a post on 0-3 months about it.

  • i'm 11 days pp, bf'ing and recovering from a cs and my bleeding has just now started to taper off

for me, it's MUCH heavier than a regular period and it's always lasted longer than a week. i've had it stop, and then start back up after a day or two as well

    Your DD is ADORABLE.

  • You will have quite a few clots the first day or two and a very heavy flow, then it will turn into something like a heavy flow period, and slowly taper off into a more white discharge which may have some pink or yellow tinge -- so long as it doesn't smell bad, it is okay. It can last 2-4 weeks on average. My first time, it lasted 2.5 weeks.

  • It's not a period, it's Lochia. For me, it lasted approximately 12 weeks. It always begins heavily and begins to slow after that - a few days to weeks after (it's different for the individual woman). It tapered off at around 6 and I only needed a panty liner after that.

A woman's menstrual flow (period) returns weeks after that. For some women, it begins at 3 months postpartum. For others, much longer after that. For women who breastfeed exclusively, it usually is put off much longer than formula feeders or women who supplement with formula. For me, mine never returned because of exclusive breastfeeding and the use of the Mirena IUD. Once I had it removed in November 2010, my period returned about four weeks later.

  • It really varies whether you breast feed or not.  I bled consistently for about 4 weeks, then off and on for another 2 - so 6 weeks total.

  • It was six weeks for me.  It did get lighter as time went on.

This sounds similar to my experience. I had a C-section and BF. And it definitely smells different.

This is about how it was for me. I exclusively pumped.

  • I bled on and off for a little over two weeks, I think.  It would almost stop and I'd get all hopeful, and then I'd get a gush that would soak through my pad and pants. Fun times! lol.

I formula fed and I got my period back 6 weeks post partum.

  • Lurker ... :)

I bled for about 4 weeks then got my period a week later so It felt like 6 weeks. However it did get alot lighter after the first week.

My ex sil has 4 children and with each one it got less. first baby being 3 weeks of bleed, next 2 weeks and the last 2 she only bled for a week. Lucky girl lol

  • I EBF and bled for about 6 weeks post-partum. Heavy for the first 10 days, then gradually lighter and lighter, until I only needed a panty liner during the last week. My period didn't come back until DD was 10 months and we dropped her nighttime feedings.

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice.  What is the difference between Lochia is that spelled right? and a regular period? I used to clot all the time during my periods so that wouldn't be much of a stretch.  It only got a little better after my 1st loss.  hopefully it won't be too bad.
