Trying to Get Pregnant

getting pregnant after depo

I was just wondering in anyone here has had difficulty getting pregnant after the depo shots? I went on it at 17 and was on it til 26. I immediately went from depo to Ortho Evra, which I took for 4 more years. Now that I am happily married and ready to start a family I stopped everything (a few months ago) and started using ovulation predictors. So far they are indicating that I am not ovulating. Has this happened to anyone else? Did everything "start working" for you eventually? Thanks!

Have you had a period (or more than one) since you stopped taking birth control?

I was lucky in that I went "back to normal" right after coming off of BC.  However, it cane take months (sometimes upwards of a year) to regulate again after BC

  • I don't think the Depo should be affecting you any more at this point, since you stopped getting them about 4 years ago, right? I've read that it can take up to 18 months after stopping Depo for some people to get back to normal/get pregnant. My cycles seemed to return to normal after about 3 months.
  • I stopped Depo 3 weeks before our wedding.....and still didn't have a period at our first anniversary...

I tried Provera and then a round of lo-bc pills and finally got my period 13 months after stopping Depo...

I have PCOS and am annovulatory.....so am now on my 3rd round of Clomid...

    But everyone's different....

Wish you the best of luck!

  • I would imagine the Depo isn't affecting your cycles anymore if you've been off it for 4 years. Personally, I went off Depo in November and still have not had a period since stopping it...not even the faintest of spotting. I actually called my Dr today and spoke with a nurse....she's having me take a pg test in the am (to make sure I'm not pregnant) and then they'll start me on something to help bring my period on.

    GL to you!

  • If it's been 4 years since you took Depo, then it's no longer in your system. As far as the Ortho Evra, it also is no longer in your system as you take it daily. And if you had to take it daily, then that means it leaves your system in around 24 hours.

However, it can still take your hormones a while to adjust to NOT being on hormonal BC. Some women adjust right away, most it takes probably around 3ish months, and some it takes close to a year.  I hope you adjust quickly and if you really want to know if you're ovulating, you can check out fertilityfriend.com and chart your basal body temp.

  • I had my last depo shot in the beginning of June, 2010.  I got my first period in Dec., 2010, after a cycle of BCP's.  I then did not ovulate for a few cycles after that.  I am just now starting to get somewhat normal cycles, however, I O late and only usually have a LP of 7 to 10 days.  I am starting acupuncture this week to see if it will help me to O earlier, or extend my LP.

  • You should be fine after being off the Depo for 4 years. I've only been off it for 2 months, so my body is still adjusting.

  • I don't think it's the depo that's messing up your cycle since it was 4 years ago. I was on depo for several years and when I went off, it took me 8 months to get a period again. I have heard it can take up to 2 years for it to leave your system, but I'm pretty sure 4 is unheard of. It's likely either your body adjusting to being off ortho evra or some other reason. As others have said, you should start charting to get to know your cycle and to tell whether you're ovulating regularly. GL!

  • When I went off Depo I bled so bad I almost couldn't keep up with AF (like a super plus tampon every half hour), and she returned almost immediately after I didn't get a shot. When I switched to the ortho evra patch (which is changed weekly) I regulated again. Now with being off the patch, AF only lasts about a day and a half, maybe 2, and fairly irregular. I've been using ovulation predictors and still nothing. I've read on several message boards about Depo causing long term problems with fertility...so I'm stressing.
