3rd Trimester

Question from 1st tri - travel at 28 weeks?

Hi ladies - I have a conference I'm supposed to travel for this fall, when I will be in week 28 of my pregnancy.  I would fly, and would probably go by myself, although I know lots of people going so it's not like I'd really be "alone."  As far as the conference being "work" it's pretty flexible - there are lots of optional things that I could skip if I didn't feel like it, and most of it's pretty low-key. I'm just wondering if you ladies feel/felt like traveling at 28 weeks.  I have a dr.'s appointment on Friday and will ask her input, but this week is my cut-off to get the early-bird registration rate so I'm trying to figure this out!  Thanks!!

  • I would, but I push the limits. I still felt good then though.

  • I felt completely fine to travel at that time. I traveled by car for 10 hours at 33 weeks. I'm just now starting to get uncomfortable.

  • I definitely would have. Around 28 weeks was when I was feeling my best. As long as our doctor oks you to fly, I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I did fly but I drove almost 4 hours each way to Maine for work 2 weeks ago (32 weeks) and I was fine with it. A little sore from all the driving but it wasn't bad. As long as you know your limits and don't over do it, go back to the hotel and relax if you need to, things like that.
  • I flew for the last time at 27 weeks - I flew a ton during first and second tri and never had a problem with it. I feel like I could hop into an airplane now and be fine (but am taking advantage of not having to go on work trips instead ;)).
  • You can do it. i was supposed to travel to TX at 28 weeks but my class got cancelled. i asked my dr about any travel restrictions prior and her policy is nothing far after 34 weeks. I really didnt start feeling uncomfortable until 32 weeks.

that being said, i'd ask for a copy of your records to take with you just in case anything happened. i've had to do this a few times whenever i travel.

I am almost 32 weeks and would still feel fine traveling now... sitting in a car for too long I wouldn't be so thrilled about.  But a plane ride and hotel...sure no problem.

  • I flew at 30 weeks with my first pregnancy.  It was fine and I still felt great.

  • I would have been fine with it at 28 weeks. I was fine doing everything until about 36 weeks.

  • I'm going to speak from a strictly "comfort" perspective... and I think it depends on how long your flight is.

I flew to Europe at 28 weeks and though it was tolerable, I was VERY uncomfortable.  My feet were so swollen when I arrived that my shoes didn't fit and sleeping upright when my stomach felt like it was constantly being compressed was virtually impossible.

I had actually been invited to an overseas wedding at 31 weeks and thought it might be possible, but after that trip at 28 weeks I decided against it. It was well worth the upgrade to business class on my way home.

Basically, I think flying at 28 weeks is totally doable, but comfortable? Not likely.

  • yes, i'm still traveling now. but we love to travel and it's very much a part of our lifestyle. taking our last pre-baby trip this weekend to san diego
  • I felt great at 28 weeks, the best I felt the entire pregnancy. I would have been fine traveling.

  • I feel great at almost 30 weeks. In fact I just went to a three day music festival and had a great time. Just take it slow and rest when you need to and you should be fine.

  • I just got back from a conference - flew at 33 weeks and came back almost at 34 weeks. It was totally fine - the ONLY caveat is just make sure that you're not traveling to a higher altitude. I live in maryland and flew to denver (i've been there before and never been bothered by the altitude) and had horrible altitude sickness until i returned to lower altitudes. The flying, though, was a piece of cake. My MW was fine with me traveling until 35 weeks.

  • I'd have no problem at week 28....the only thing is the 3rd tri fatigue really has set in, but as long as you could rest well at night (maybe squeeze in a nap?) you'd be fine.

of course, if things were not going smoothly up until 28 weeks, might be a different story.

  • I am at 29 weeks now and flew from Utah to Canada for work this week. It wasn't bad until I didn't get any sleep because the hotel walls were so thin I could hear everything. I am just ready to be home in my own bed BUT feeling good.

  • I think it'll be fine, as long as you're not high risk. I'm flying across the country next week, and will return 10 days later at 32 weeks. I'm not concerned. I'll just be sure to get an aisle seat and get up to walk around, and stay hydrated. If you have problems with your feet swelling up, you can get these compression socks that are supposed to help. I haven't had any problems with swollen feet so far, so I don't think I'll bother.
  • I was still very comfortable at 28 weeks. HOWEVER: when I was little, I fractured my tailbone, and sitting for long periods of time causes me tons of pain. So even though I felt good, sitting in a car or plane for more than a couple hours would have been unpleasant. This has never been an issue with me until I got pregnant. My doctor told me that old injuries sometimes act up when you are pregnant.
