Babies: 3 - 6 Months

how's your 4.5-5 month old sleeping?

C is napping great (3 naps, usually 45-60 minutes in the morning, 1.5-3 hours in the afternoon and a 30-60 minute catnap in the evening) and is very easy to put down for naps.

Her night sleeping is still crap. Up until 3-4 weeks ago, she was doing 7:30-4, up to eat, then back down until 6:30-7. Now she's really hard to put down at night (up every 10-20 minutes for 1-2 hours until she settles in and falls asleep), then up around 2-3. Then all hell breaks loose...sometimes she's up for an hour or two, sometimes she'll go back down but wake up again every 30-45 minutes until she's up for the day around 6:30. I've just started feeding her at that first 2-3:00 wake-up and hopefully that will help.

What's your LO doing? I'm getting frustrated with this particular phase, especially because I feel like I've been putting her down still awake (not fully but not fully asleep) and giving her chances to go to sleep on her own, but she's just not getting it yet and I'm not ready to do CIO :(

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • We are working on this as well. I tried Ferber and the poor thing cried for 2 hours without slowing down. This was with regualr intervals of me going in and soothing him. When it became apparent that was not working, we changed our plan and now try to get him to sleep in the crib, with one of us in the room. If he starts to fuss, we try not to touch him, but say "Mama is right here, you are doing great". It is working way better and not as harsh as leaving the room when he is already upset!

  • A lot of similarities here! The napping is pretty much just like you said, with the 3 naps a day. She was sleeping her long stretch from 11-7, but about a month ago started waking up 1-2 times/night. Each night is different, which is frustrating, and her wake up time seems to be different every day now, too. I am not ready to do ferber yet, so I totally get what you mean about it being frustrating right now. I can't put her down awake at all..... which I know is the magic trick right now- it's just not working at all for us. I feel like it probably won't get better until I am ready to do some serious (ferber) sleep training.

  • I could have written your OP. Our great sleeper has turned into a bear to put to bed. Tonight it took us 2 hours....

  • What is this sleep thing that you speak of?

Kelsy is up at least every 2 hours at night...sometimes more. Can't let her cry because we are staying with family and don't want to bother them. She needs to either be nursed or rocked back to sleep every time. She naps for about 45 to 60 minutes 3 or 4 times a day. This has been her sleep pattern since she was 2 months old.

  • We are in the same boat. he was doing 12-13 hours straight each night, with no waking, for a while - at least a couple of months.  Now, for the last week and a half he is up every 2-3 hours.  It's killing me!

  • I am unfamiliar with this thing called "sleep" you speak of.

blegh. Apparently Claire naps like a rock star at DC and even for my H on days he picks her up early. Night time sleeping, however, is a whole other ball game.

Just the past week or so she will go down around 7:30 for an hour or so and then pop awake and want to do a combo of play and nurse. I nursed her on and off from 9:00-12:30 last night.  She wasnt nursing to eat, she was just pacifying. gaaaaaaaah.
