I would love to take the kids swimming sometime but I am completely overwhelmed by the thought. I would have DH with me of course...no way would I go it alone...any tips?

I take my kids swimming all the time by myself. It's really not hard... I put my 1 yr old in the floaty baby tube and big kid tube around my 2 yr old. I keep them near me at all times but most of the time I end up carrying one of them around when they get antsy. Pool trips probably only last a half hour but they will play on the steps for hours when I bring buckets and stuff for them to fill/empty.
Good luck and honestly if I can do it by myself you will be fine with your DH there.
You'll be fine. I've gone by myself. I put DD1in the float and carry DD2. I did buy a water sling yesterday on babysteals, so we'll see how that works. I put sunblock on before we leave the house. If the kids are wearing a 2 piece suit, I put the rash guard on at home and leave them in their diaper. If they are in a one piece, I strip them down to a diaper and put a swimsuit cover up on --- it's a two minute walk to the pool, but I like them to be as "ready" as possible, when we get there.
I do it alone now that DD is older. She goes in her baby ring, DS stays in the zero entry end with us in his vest (it doesnt keep him all the way afloat, just so he doesnt sink) If we go in the deep end I hold DS and keep DD in her ring right next to me.
Last summer DS was 18 months in June and DD was a newborn. Its SO hot here that being outside was too dangerous for her for more than 20 mins. I didnt trust my son to listen to me while alone, so we just did the baby pool in the backyard and when DH was home we did the big pool.
If you have a public baby pool near your house, you can keep the baby in the stroller in the shade next to the pool and let your older one play for 20 mins. I wouldnt do the deeper pool unless you felt your older one was very safe. My fear was what if DS fell in the deep end while I was wearing/holding the baby, would I get in fast enough? I over think things, but If I dont think I can do it safely I dont.

Mine are 3 and 5 this summer and it's the first summer I've felt comfortable taking them to a public pool by myself. Both my girls are finally swimming!
In the past I hired a teenager to come with me and watch older DD while I watched younger DD. We were able to stay two hours and sometimes longer at the pool if I brought a helper. Older DD has always been super active and can disappear in a split second. For me it was much less stressful to just hire another set of hands to help.
I think a lot depends on your children's swimming skills and also the pool setting. Some pools are nightmarish for attempting to watch two non-swimming children, while others might be a lot easier. Depends on the design of the pool. Ours has a huge water feature in the middle that you can't see around, with a deeper water area behind it.
I put DS1 in a puddle jumper and he usually hangs out by the stairs. DS2 is in a float or I'm holding him. I'm lucky though and IL's have a pool so MIL is usually with us as well.
