Is he ready to potty train?

Ugh...  let me start by saying potty training is not my favorite thing and I am not in a rush.  Gavin will tell me as soon as he has gone poop but never asks to get on the potty for that.  He will go to the potty to pee when he is diaper free.  But if he is playing he will forget sometimes.  I am in the camp that when the are ready it shouldn't take long at all.  With Garrison I think I tried too soon and it was frustrating for both of us.  I'd like to avoid that if I can.  I'm so on the fence about buying another box of diapers or going to get some training pants.  How did you know when your LO was ready?

Re: Is he ready to potty train?

  • I'm not sure.  For DS, my huge fat signs were that he stayed dried for many hours at a time on a regular basis.  He knew when he had to go and couldn't sleep if he had to go.  He would tell me before he pooped but still wanted to go in his diaper.  I knew he could go on the potty and that he had all the awareness necessary so I went with it when I was finally ready and it went really well and fast.  Good luck!

  • We're just starting with Miles so I'm not sure I can say we have "successfully" recognized readiness signs...:)  But we started because he started to poop at a pretty regular time each day, and he started to announce he was pooping.  He also has had some constipation issues, but if he's on his potty watching Bob The Builder, he poops without issue.

We're thinking of it as "potty learning" rather than "potty training," because we're just introducing him to the potty and not really working with him on getting to the potty when he needs to go.  We've shown him some underwear and he's not at all interested in wearing them.
