daycare $$

I've been calling around to daycares inquiring for prices and im amazed at the $! I love on Long Island and so far the pricing im getting is $215 to 255 per week for part time (3 days) and $30 per day for OT hours. What price ranges is everyone else getting?

Re: daycare $$

  • It's totally going to depend on your area.

  • We have a provincial $7/day program (full day) but those spots are really hard to come by.  On average it's about $20 per day.

  • I pay $170 dollars a week. I'm in south Texas.
  • It depends on the area, but in Northern VA, we will be paying about $320/week for fulltime daycare.  This equals about what we pay for our mortgage.

I'm from this area as well. How crazy is that?!

  • Very much dependent on your area and what type of childcare provider you are dealing with (center v. in-home). I live in a LCOL to MCOL area in Illinois. Centers around here do not allow PT and you will pay anywhere from $190/week to $240/week. In-homes range from $20/day to $45/day and some allow PT, some don't. In our current arrangement, DS is at a large in-home with multiple caregivers (however, the owner is opening a center in August, so we'll be switching to a center but our rate won't change because she's offering to keep any clients that make the switch to stay at the same rate). We pay $133 for 4 days a week.

  • Ours is about $325 a week, which comes out to about what we pay in rent each month.
  • I live in the Minneapolis area and we will be paying $334/week at a center - and that's not even one of the pricey ones.
  • I know people who pay $500 a week for full time infant.

This makes me cry!  I have to start looking, and I heard we are one of the most expensive states for daycare, but really?!?! Crying

I cant believe how it varies! It will cost the same as me working 14 hours to pay for the daycare alone...May need to start looking into nanny care!

  • nannies usually cost more than daycare (unless you share or have more than one child)

Ours is betweeen $1200 - 1400 per month for daycare. Although, since they start at age 1 - the price isnt that high for too long. The price decreases in toddler care. I think that starts at 18mths.

Anywhere from $25-$35 a day depending on the age of the child. We however have government subsidy for low income families and it is generally a 2 - 3 year wait to get your child in a subsidized facility.

We don't qualify for subsidy so we are looking at the full price so about $700 a month, if I go back to work.

  • I can't believe how expensive childcare is around the states! I guess they can charge whatever they want because they know you have to go back to work so they pretty much have you by the short and curlies. I live in South Carolina and the average rate I've been getting is about $140/wk and I would have to provide diapers, wipes, formula, clothes, etc. I am glad I live in a little town and not in a big city b/c I definitely would not be able to go back to work. My mother-in-law will be retiring next year so I'm hoping I can get the "grandma" discount. :)

I'm also in the area and am kinda jealous of your mortgage... but for real, we are lucky that our good family friends own a daycare center that is just across the street from my moms house. I am pretty sure that we are getting a discount but we might only be sending him part time.

  • I am also in the Northern VA area.  We are on a wait list for two places....one is about $1,600 per month and the other is about $1,800 per month.  Crazy!  In addition to the crazy costs the wait list is a year long!  Would love to connect with you Northern VA Ladies to see where you are looking at.
  • In Westchester, NY I'm getting pricing from $1020 to $1400 per month for 3 days/week!!  It's craziness!!!

  • Depends on your area.  I've only called one but they are typical for the area. $200/week - no matter how many days LO goes. I'm a nurse and I work 3 days a week - typically every other weekend so little boy will only need to go about 2 days a week. We are looking into other options.

  • I'm on the island too, and so far the cheapest I've found for full time infant day care is $1286 a month.  The tutor time by me is $1500 a month.  Any in-home daycares I have contacted either have long waitlists or do not take children under two.  I know a few people that use unlicensed in-home "babysitters" in the area and are paying around $900 a month for full time and typically they have been family friends.

  • We will be paying $146.25/week for this LO.
  • If my mom doesn't end up moving out to my neck of the woods, I'll be paying $400 a month for in-home daycare. It's the same place my SIL sent her daughter and she did great there. I too have to provide formula, diapers, wipes, etc, but that's no problem.

Sad I have no idea what we'd do if we had to pay for daycare. I can't imagine spending that much a month especially considering I don't feel like any daycare in this area is worth it.

  • In the Kansas City area it's anywhere from $100 a week to $280 a week, at least at the places I called.  I'm sure they go much higher.  The centers are of course at the higher end of that price range.  We will likely be going with an in home daycare for $145 a week, which is a steal.  So sad, but I suppose they've got to make a living too.

  • Ours will be around $750-$900/week, but we're in a HCOL (Chicago).  We're looking more for PT care, but the higher quality places don't really want to do that (or won't adjust the price accordingly)

I'm at about that in West-Central Florida. ($800 - 900 per month) for full time infant.  I'm down to about $600 per month for my 3 year old. For about 9 months I'll be working almost free.
