Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Food Allergies

DD is a little over 4 months old. We aren't starting solids until 6 months because she has colic and pedi thinks we should wait. My question is, what do you do if she has an allergic reaction to a food? Is there a baby benadryl that you give or what. This may be a stupid question but I have never seen anything on it and it concerns me. TIA

Re: Food Allergies

  • Thanks for asking this, I'm curious to see the responses because I was wondering the same thing. After my DD's surgery last week, the surgeon slapped an allergy alert tag on her for the potential for latex allergies... and latex allergies are associated with allergies to certain fruits, including apples and bananas that we eat all the time!

  • I would asy it depends what it is. When they say reactions they are talking about anything things like rashes, diarrhea, vomiting. Which, if you stop feeding that food then it should clear.

If it was something more serious like airway constriction i'd say thats equals an ER visit.

  • I just went to the pedi today about A being allergic to apples and bananas. He is! She told me it will probably go away after a few months, but until then, don't give him those fruits. When I tried both, he broke out into a rash along his temples and down around his eyes. I stopped feeding him immediately and after about 20 min. the rash was gone. She said many babies go through this at this age and by the time he's a year old, it'll probably be okay.

This.  For rashes, hives, vomiting, you call the pedi.  For respiratory reactions, call 911.

  • I figured with the mild reactions they would clear up on their own. I was talking something more serious, like airway constriction. I know to call 911, but DH is on the EMS squad and lets just put it this way, their response times for a lot of stuff suck. So I was just wondering if there was anything you kept on hand for emergencies while your waiting for medical help.

Did you ask this on the food allergy board?  They might have more info for you.
