Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Solids Questions

So you know when the doctor says do you have any questions and I always say ummmm no? Well here they all are - AFTER I got home... I plan to call but wanted to post here too just to see what everyone else says...

What type of cereal do I start with - in the store I see Rice, wheat, barely, oatmeal, etc...? How often - 1x a day and when would I increase amounts? What time of day is best? Do I DECREASE formula feeding? How long on cereal and then when to switch to veggies? TIA =)

Re: Solids Questions

  • You are supposed to start with Rice, b/c it's the least allergic forming.  I started with oatmeal b/c LO has constipation issues.  1x a day, and I made it his "dinner" meal, 5pm.  I also give LO just an ounce of formula afterwards to wash down his cereal.  I do not give a full bottle, but I know some do.  My LO barely finishes an ounce when he's done eating.  We were on cereal for probably 2-3 weeks before I started introducing veggies, which I mixed into his cereal.  And after 1 month, we went to 2x a day, around 10am and 5pm.  HTH!  Good luck!

  • We started rice cereal at 2x per day AFTER breastfeeding.  After a week of just cereal, we mixed in some apples 1x per day and after a week of that we switched to bananas.  I plan to offer pears next.

  • They recommend starting with rice but we went straight to oatmeal since rice constipated DS horribly.

The cereal is for pratice not for nutrition and it should not replace any bottles. The same goes for if/when you start veggies/fruits. Their intake of solids does not replace their bottle.

Also, I have been told to start any new food in the mornings just incase there your LO has a reaction to the food you are able to contact your doctor. Otherwise we just do it around noon since that is the best time for us.  We have moved passed cereal(pretty much skipped it) but we only give 1oz of food per day.

  • We just started solids on the 14th of this month and we started with rice and mixed some of the formula into the rice. We had him only eat rice for a week just in case he developed an allergy. You can increase the amount of rice to fit your child. I don't recommend doing more then 2 tbsp though because it does expand when wet. Remember a little powdered food makes a lot of wet food. I didn't decrease the amount of formula he gets either. So far he gets rice with his "lunch time" bottle and now we're up to veggies as well. Make sure you wait at least 3 days before introducing new foods just to make sure there are no allergies to foods. FYI my son doesn't like just the rice he makes faces so it doesn't hurt to mix some veggies in with it when you get to that point. And don't switch to veggies...add veggies in to the meal as well. I'm waiting another month for my son to start going to the 2 a day food and then he will be eating breakfast and lunch.

  • Our pedi just changed their recommendations based on new studies. They do not suggest rice or oatmeal but to start with cream of wheats. New studies have shown introducing wheat between 4-6 months reduces the risk of wheat allergy. On iPad I can't get the link to work.

We skipped the cereal all together and went straight to fruits and veggies because they have more nutritional value. The only good thing about cereal is the iron really. Formula should not decrease. If you're just starting, try once a day after a bottle.
