Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Was this a weird thing to say?

We went to our playgroup this morning that is for new moms with babies six weeks to one year. In the parking lot, one of the moms saw me loading C into the car. I put the brakes on her stroller down before I snapped off the infant seat. She has a baby about three months older, and she says to me, "Wow, you must really be a new mom. You use the brakes and everything! I think I did that for the first month before I learned to relax a little." I was so caught off guard that I just nodded and kept loading her in, but I ALWAYS put down the brakes on her stroller when I'm in a parking lot loading the car in case it were to roll right into the traffic. I'd do this whether or not I had six kids, let alone a new baby. Am I the crazy one or this chick??

  • She is. Parking lots aren't perfectly flat and a lot can happen in the blink of an eye, I always lock mine.

  • You're not crazy! I do the same thing. And you know what? My mom has raised 3 kids and she does the same thing too, I just thought that was common sense. It has nothing to do with "experience" and relaxing a little.

  • I also always put the brake on my stroller when I am loading/unloading.  Mostly because usually my back ends up turned to the stroller while I get the car ready and I don't want it rolling off.  It seems to me like the common sense thing to do not only for the safety of my baby, but also to keep my stroller from becoming roadkill even if the baby were not in it.

Ditto.  I can't imagine being so careless.

This! I'd be so sad to see my stroller get hit by another car because it rolled into the street as I was strapping LO into the carseat and not paying attention to the stroller! What a wacko!!

  • I will admit that I don't lock it 100% of the time depending on where I am, etc. but I always do in a parking lot.  And I'm slow enough in the brain lately that I forget that I locked it and try to move it without unlocking about 80% of the time!  :)  Shows how much of a habit it is to lock it that I do it without thinking.

  • She is crazy.  I would have said "Really?  I thought it was common sense."  Maybe next time she would think twice before saying something stupid.

  • Uh, yeah, she's just being careless.

The other day, DS's snap and rolled away from me after I thought I had put the brakes on before getting his carseat out. (I put my foot on them as usual, but one or both of them didn't go down properly, not sure what happened). I had a mini panic attack when I turned around and saw it wasn't right there anymore. All I had done was put a bag in the backseat. The stroller was right next to me.

DS was asleep, and no one saw me grab it quickly-but I was mortified and a bit freaked. It rolled further than I would have thought possible in about 2 seconds.

  • Yes, it was a weird thing to say.  I guess she never saw that news footage of the security camera of the lady in Australia (I think) that turned her back on her stroller on a train platform for 1 second and it rolled off the platform and under an oncoming train.  Baby was fine somehow, but you could see the mom's panic when she realized what was happening.

    1. lol @ the fact that she said you're "really a new mom" while her first kid is only a couple months older.

    2. Learning to "relax a little" =/= putting your baby at risk of getting run over in a parking lot because you're too lazy to snap a brake down.

  • Sounds passive aggressive to me. You are doing right momma.

  • She sounds very condesending to me. You were right; she's a careless know-it-all.
  • She's an idiot.

There is a world of difference between being a relaxed mom and being a careless, irresponsible mom.

  • I always put the brake on when I'm taking DS out. I don't like it moving as I'm trying to pull him out and it's hard to collapse it without the brake on. Some people just love to act like they're so much more seasoned than you and belittle you. Sounds cliche, but it really does just make them feel better about themselves.

  • Just speaking for myself but..I would never relax to the point of putting my baby in danger. Yes, this was a crazy thing for her to say, and do IMO. Haven't people seen all the footage of things that happen in the blink of an eye?
