Am I being too overprotective?

ok, I already know its just my overprotective mommy mode... but Jay's summer camp includes a half hour of swim lessons Mon thru Thurs.  I guess i was just assuming it would be cancelled in today's weather, especially since it started to rain in these parts already.  I called his school to see and the teacher (kind of rudely) said that they swim regardless if it is raining, even if it is raining hard.  the only time they dont swim is if there is lightening.

since it is close by i usually drop in to see Jay swimming, the kids were freezing and shivering and so unhappy... it just made me kinda sad

ok, so now you can tell me... I am just over sensitive about this right?  It wont do any harm for him to be out there in the rain and it is good for him right?  So why do I feel guilty about it??

  • I'd be upset if it were my kid at this age range. With that said, I was on a swim team starting at around 10 years old. We also swam rain or shine. It wasn't bad because once you were in the water, it was actually warmer than the outside air. Why I would be upset at this age is if they were standing outside, in the cold, in bathing suits and getting wet but being in the air more than the water. That's just cruel.

  • I had the same reservations when R had swim lessons back in may and it was horrible weather. T urns out the pool was 92 degrees and he was fine.  I would ask them about the pool temperature over the weather - that's just my 2 cents. (Coming from a mom who will be taking her son to swim lessons at 5:30 today.)

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • It won't do him any harm.  We had Peyton in outdoor swimming lessons last year and it was freezing.  He wasn't happy about it, but it didn't hurt him.
  • I swam from age 5 through college, and we had to be in that water year round no matter the weather- barring lightning. While I don't agree with them just sitting outside in the cold getting rained on, getting rained on while being wet isn't such a big deal. Esp since the pool is probably warmer than it is outside & it feels nice.
  • It is actually really FUN to swim in the rain, especially when it's a warm rain. Some of my favorite memories are ones from swimming in the rain during the summer. I bet he'll have a great time!!
  • We always swam in the rain...it's just the getting in and out that's cold.  I love the look from underwater as the rain hits the water.
