Toddlers: 24 Months+

Suddenly afraid of bath!

We do baths every other night.  3 nights ago DS had a traumatic bath experience.  He pooped in the tub and he freaked out (partly because DH screamed like a little girl and reacted to it).  So I cleaned out the tub and we tried to put him back in but he was hysterical.  DH had to stand in the tub just so we could rinse him from before the poop incident.  So last night's bath was awful.  He clung to us and wouldn't get in.  I had to sit in the tub with him to get him to stay.  He needed a bath because he was dirty yesterday so we had to do it.

Any help?  Will he just get over it on his own?

Re: Suddenly afraid of bath!

  • Hi there.  Lurking a bit as DS is younger, but this exact thing happened to us in the Spring and he was FREAKED out by baths.  It honestly took a few months for him to get over it.  I just kept bathing him--every other night, and perhaps more quickly than before--and he screamed and yelled until he got past it.

I hope your son gets over it sooner.

Other suggestions besides waiting: new bath toys, tub paint, something to make the bath more appealing.

  • Dd went through this a few months ago, only we have no idea what made her hate her bath. I had to get in with her for a few weeks and then one day she was over it and she loves her bath again. Just give him time and show him that the tub isn't scary. I like the idea of new toys or tub paint.
