Bottle to cup transition

So I hope I haven?t totally screwed myself, but at daycare DS only gets sippy cups, but I have kept a morning and evening bottle of milk, but this week wanted to really start making the move from all cups.  MJD has done totally find with the transition from formula to milk.

So this morning I wanted to try a sippy cup of milk instead and MJD would not have it!  DH was like ?he?s still a baby? blah, blah, blah?  I told him it?s either the morning or night one, you pick, I?m cutting it.  I think is hilarious he's the softy here..

I know we have until 15 months for him to totally be transitioned, but I feel like the more I stall it the worse it will get.  He?ll drink anything else out of a sippy cup, which cracks me up, so I don?t know what his deal is with milk.  Words of wisdom would be wonderful.  I'm sure I'm worrying too much about it, but I just don't want this to be a horrible battle.

TIA!

Re: Bottle to cup transition

  • I just did it cold turkey right after her 1st birthday. I just did the switch in one big swoop. It took her a couple days to take the sippy cup, but I never let her have the bottle. If she wanted the milk, she had to have it out of a sippy cup.

I think that's what I'm going to have to do with MJD.

Same thing. Cold turkey worked best for us. It did take a couple of days for her to get adjusted, but once she did, there was no looking back.

  • Same here.  I had to go cold turkey and get rid of all signs of bottles everywhere.  After about 3 days he started drinking his morning milk out of the sippy cup.

  • I have a friend whose DS didn't like milk out of the sippy because he was used to it being water in there or something, so she finally offered him a sippy with a straw for the milk (which was different than the other sippy cups he used) and he took it immediately.  Cold turkey is probably the best way to go, but I thought I'd throw that idea out there, too, in case he's used to a particular type of sippy.

  • The straw idea is great!  We have SUCH a variety of cups at our house, and this would be one of them :)

Thanks so much Ladies for all the advice!  It's always another transition :)

  • I like the straw cup idea but I definitely think you have to go cold turkey. DS was reluctant to give up the bottle and the pedi told us that we should just keep offering the sippy. She said he'd get thirsty eventually and unless it'd been more than 3 days he was fine. He didn't even last all day before he gave in to the sippy.

  • Thanks again everyone!  Last night at dinner I only gave MJD milk in a sippy cup, and he gulped it down so at bedtime no bottle, just our routine, bath, book and Mama singing.  I was terrified he would melt down, but he didn't.  And this morning, another sippy cup of milk, although I had a friend who suggested putting a drinkable yogurt, so added a bit of the Yo Yo baby banana drinkable yogurt and no melt down.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed we are good, but prepared for the next couple of days for him to "catch on" :)
