Cerclage

So, I had the dreaded cerclage done 2 weeks ago at 20 weeks. I went in for my first Peri US and they noted both "GIRLS!" to be doing very well, but noticed my cervix was only about 1.3 cm with some major funneling going on. I was told I needed to get a cerclage done the next day. The whole next day was spent at the hospital from 9am to 9pm. The procedure went well and I decided to stay awake for it with just a spinal block. I had a strict 4 day bedrest until my next appt to check my cervix. This US went well and they said that my cervix was about 1.8 cm now (still with funneling). The doc said bedrest was the way to go. So. me being a very active person and living on a beef farm with my husband must behave and not do too much.

I'm going nuts sitting around the house, but have kept myself somewhat busy with moves (we have netflix and I highly recommend it to everyone!).

Has anyone else had a cerlage done. When did you go into labor? Did you have to be on bedrest? Any complications?

Re: Cerclage

  • sorry you are having such a rough time... but do take the bedrest seriously. It's all you can really do to prevent having them too early... and you are right now in the most crucial weeks to get through - to get to 24 weeks... then goals of going each week after that.

www.keepemcookin.com has great info on PTL, how to prevent, lots of info about steriod shots, etc. One of the best spots i ever found online for such info.

I was not on bedrest with the twins- but was with my singleton (go figure).  It's especially hard to be on bedrest if you feel fine - for me I was in pain then so it wasn't so bad.

Just stay busy... have friends come visit you and bring lunch if they can... take an online class (I had planned to take photoshop if I was on bedrest with the twins but never got to- and i still wish i had the time!)... organize digital photos... surf the net... become a message board whore like I was :) lol.

best of luck- every day cookin' them right now is what matters - visit the preemie board if you want inspiration to stay on bedrest - b/c it's all you can really do to avoid all the issues you can go through with preemies.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I had one done at 22 weeks because my cervix lost over 3.5cm in 2 weeks.  The procedure went well, I had no complications, and my peri was actually able to get a good 2cm underneath the stitch to lengthen my cervix from the less than 0.5cm it was.

At 31 weeks I went into preterm labor.  In about 3 days, my cervix went from 2cm to absolutely nothing except the tiny bit that was stitched.  After being in and out of the hospital, getting steroid shots, and being put on Procardia (which really didn't do anything to stop the contractions), I kind of settled into a pattern of the labor being "normal" since the stitch was still holding somehow.  It held until it was taken out at 36 weeks, and I didn't go into full labor until after 37 weeks.  My OB only thinks my cervix held another week because of the scar tissue from the cerclage not wanting to stretch.  Lord knows there was enough scar tissue from the constant pulling and stretching it did against the cerclage during those last few weeks.

At the very least I was on modified bedrest for my entire pregnancy after getting the cerclage, and then of course strict bedrest after going into preterm labor.  It didn't hurt at all when it was taken out.  She just went in during my 36 week appt with a speculum like for a pap smear, snipped, pulled, and out it came with no pain or discomfort at all.

  • I had one done at 15wks as a precaution. By the time I was 37wks with my dc#1 I was 3cm dilated and 75% effaced.  At 38wks walking in to be induced I was 4cm dilated & 100% effaced.  I wasnt even having contractions at all and felt wonderful.  Once my dr. broke my water (after 3 hours of just sleeping) my contractions started and I went from 5-10 in 30mins while they were doing my epi.  I then only pushed for 11 mins. (3 contractions worth)

So, with the girls being so soon after my first birth (L was only 1yr & 11 days old when they were born) he wanted to make sure my cervix didnt dilate early.

I didnt have any problems with it.  It did its job and I made it to 36wks without any bedrest.  My only issue was that the girls would not grow.  At 36wks they were still only showing 4lbs on the u/s.  They were 4lbs 8oz each at birth at 36wks & 3days.  Planned csection due to continued lack of growth.
