What to take on Vacation for 2 year old????

We are going on vacation to the beach for 8 days this weekend. I am not sure what all to take as far as toys for my DS who is 2 years old?? I have some books set aside, his favorite disney cars, and beach toys for the beach. What am I missing? I am afraid I am not taking enough toys to keep him occupied during down time? Thanks

  • We have traveled quite a bit with our DS, both by air and road trips of about 6-8ish hours.  I always try to go purchase a few new small toys to occupy him with when times get desperate.  Otherwise I take a couple small books, a few of his favorite small cars, some little blocks or something to build with  and that's about it, other than a few DVD's for the car.  He inevitably ends up finding new stuff to play with wherever we go and we usually end up buying him some new type of toy souvenir while we are there.  Plus if it's a trip with or to see family they always end up getting him something, thus we always come home with more than we left with.

  • My first thought was a nanny :)  Wouldn't that be nice.  But for a beach vacation, sounds like you have a good selection.  The beach itself is going to keep him totally occupied most of the days.  Let him collect shells and pebbles to bring back to the room at night.  That will keep his interest more than toys.  If you have a portable DVD player, you might bring one favorite movie for the really difficult evening or rainy day.  But honestly, the new environment is going to provide so much stimulation that he won't touch half of what you bring.

ETA:  Oh, and teach him to build a tent from a couple chairs and a sheet.  This provides DD with hours of fun and imagination

  • we are heading to the beach too and I am planning to take some small cars and books as well as the beach toys...I'll also take 2 puzzles and a coloring book for each of them with crayons...and that's it as far as toys go...have a fabulous trip!  I am so looking forward to ours...even if it is with dh's entire family...
  • I would make sure you have stuff for indoors. Last year I took some Mega Blocks for E. Also, maybe some movies for quiet time before bed.
  • We bring small stuff for DD to play with, same as PP's above. I also bring an etch a sketch and stickers. I downloade videos and apps for DD on my iPad as well.

  • We took a trip to the beach at the beginning of last month.  Several friends suggested taking a long a small, blowup pool for DD in case she was afraid of the water.  DD ended up loving the water and we didn't use the pool, but it was nice to have as backup.
