Cleft Palate...?

Is there an u/s you can get to see if the baby has a Cleft Palate? I keep seeing things about it-& I'm worried its a sign!! I'll still love my baby, don't get me wrong-I just would like to know so If I need to, I wont take as much sick leave/maternity leave, that way I can be there for the baby with its multiple surgeries. My DH thinks I am crazy & doesn't think there is such thing but, I thought I read somewhere that there is an U/S for that.

If there is such thing, has anyone done the u/s to find out?

Re: Cleft Palate...?

  • They will check at your NT scan & at the fetal survey (anatomy scan).  The chances are low so don't stress :)

This is some unsolicited advice, but try not to invent things to be worried about. You'll never enjoy your pregnancy if you keep doing that.

  • It would be too early to tell. My cousin's baby was growing too quickly (aleady 1 lb at her anatomy scan) so they feared a cleft palate b/c a baby measuring bigger than normal and with excess amniotic fluid (which she had) is usually a sign. She had to wait 2 weeks and go to a 3-D u/s where they confirmed everything was great-- just that big babies run in the family ;)

  • the mind is a powerful thing, which is not good sometimes.  You probably started thinking about it and then just notice when you see things related to a cleft palate...I used to do this with certain things but I now realize it is completely ridiculous!

    Oh boy.

Of all the things in the world that can go wrong, you're giving yourself panic attacks over a cleft palate? I realize that it's a concern and that a cleft palate can be linked with other genetic conditions, but come on.

Take a deep breath and relax.

You're going to have a loooooong road ahead of you if you keep imagining every possible bad thing happening to your child. They've got a long life to live and you'll drive yourself crazy as they get older thinking of all the things that can go wrong.

  • It's gonna be ok!  Don't fret too much about cleft palate. I find myself getting stressed if I read too  much about what can go wrong. Remember that stress is bad for your little one, and focus yourself on the overwhelming odds that your baby will be healthy!

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Of all the things that could go wrong, cleft palate is fixable. It isn't always detected on us if the baby doesn't have cleft lip as well. My daughter had cleft palate. We had four us including a level two, and it wasn't detected. But, I really wouldn't worry about it.

  • My friend knows her baby will have a cleft palate.  I think it was detected at her anatomy scan.  Then again, as we've both read, its not detectable in every case.  To allow extra time for it in terms of maternity leave, well, hard to plan that.  But I agree with everyone, do not worry about it.  We have enough to worry about!
