Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Crying it Out?

Anna Elise has been a fairly good sleeper from day 1. Right now, her schedule is bed around 8om, dreamfeed at 9:30 or 10pm (which she is rarely fully awake for) and then sleeps until 6am. Anna is an EXTREMELY active baby and wakes up almost every hour between 3:30am and the 6:00am wake time. When she wakes up, my husband and I run in there to pat her, stick a pacifier in her mouth, wrap her back up every time she wakes up before 6. We try to run in there before she starts really wailing so she goes back to sleep faster. Normally, she goes back to sleep with in 3 or 4 minutes.. only to be grunting around again in another hour to an hour and half. She doesn't need to eat... she just wakes up.

Is running in there to give her a pacifier, settle her down starting a bad habit? She's 4 months old, is it appropriate to start letting her "cry it out"?

Re: Crying it Out?

  • 4 month wakeful.  Is she breastfed?  It is probable that she is hungry, actually.

She was breasfed until 8 weeks when she decided to scream after every feeding. We tested for acid reflex, changed my diet etc.. and she ultimately just hated it. She's now on GentleEase formula. Her last 10pm bottle, she gets 6oz of formula with one tablespoon of Rice Cereal. She's also 100% percentile in Height and Weight for 4 months old. She's just a big girl. She might be hungry, but she goes to sleep with just a little soothing. If Anna was hungry she wouldnt settle for a pacifier. She also isnt usually that interested in her morning bottle either. Maybe takes 4-5oz vs. her usual 6oz. I assume she's just not a breakfast person. ;)

It sounds like she's uncomfortable. DD did the same thing until we started putting her to sleep at an angle. She slept much better then. As far as CIO, I would wait because she is still young. There's a better chance of her needing something rather than having a self soothing issue.

  • Try reading and implementing the baby whisperers technique. It's not CIO but it does address night waking. As pp said, check her comfort first.

  • Thanks for the advice. :) I truly don't want to let her cry it out...I'll try a different sleeping position maybe.
  • She seems a bit young for CIO.  If you do decide to go that route, make sure you research it and learn about it first. CIO is not just letting them cry!
