I am a newb and I have no idea what to get. I have a ton of stuff growing that I'd like to can when it's time to harvest - both low and high acid foods.
What do I need and where do I get it the cheapest? TIA!
Mom to six awesome kids - Levi is 12, Landen is 8, Gabrielle is 6, Lucas is 3, and Oliver and Samuel are 2 years old. Love my crew.
Depending on what you plan to make and what kind of low acid foods you have, you may or may not need a pressure canner.
My first year, I did water bath canning in large stock pots and stuff, and froze most of the low acid stuff rather than canning it. So, all I bought that year was jars, lids, and a jar lifter. I mostly did jams and fruit butters.
Last year, I branched out a bit, but I stuck with the stock pot method of water bathing. I only did two things that needed pressure canned, and I borrowed a canner from a family member.
To be super economical, I'd check CL or freecycle for your area.

if you decide to freeze stuff, be sure to remember to leave a decent amount of room for the liquid to expand. i froze a bunch of spaghetti sauce once and filled them too full and the jars burst in the freezer. >_<
