Babies: 3 - 6 Months

sleeping on his tummy

So, my LO thinks he's something great because he can now roll from his back to his tummy. I can't put him on his back for longer than a minute before he smiles and rolls over. The problem? He can't seem to figure out how to roll from his tummy to his back, so shortly after he rolls onto his tummy he gets frustrated and needs to be rolled back over.

So, I just put him to bed (on his back) an hour ago. I went up to check on him a few minutes ago and he is on his tummy. Do I leave him like that????? He's 5 months old, and I don't think I would be worried if I knew he could roll himself back over if he didn't want to be on his tummy anymore, but since he can't....

What would you do? Would you try to roll him back over? Or just let him be?

Re: sleeping on his tummy

  • LOL - our LO did the same thing! We left him on his tummy - when he woke up and cried because he wanted to flip back over we would put him on his back. He inevitably wound up on his tummy again...this went on for a few nights. Now he can flip back easily but prefers to be on his tummy. I just check the monitor closely throughout the night to make sure he's ok. So far so good.

Even if you put him on his back, he'll flip again. There isn't much you can do other than maybe use tape?? LOL

DD can go back and forth.  Since Friday night, she has been sleeping on her belly.  I put her on her back, but it only lasts a few minutes...longer if she's completely out when I put her down.  I flipped her back several times on Friday night, but she kept going back.  I quit trying.

  • I would let him be, he's more comfortable like that.  If he wants to be on his back again I'm sure he'll let you know, he'll be ok on his tummy :)

  • When DS started doing this, my pediatrician told me to just leave him be.

  • Thanks everyone. I feel better about letting him be now. I asked my mom...but you know they had crazy rules back then... =)

  • My DS has doing this since 3 months old.  The pedi told us, if he rolls onto his belly he is strong enough to move his head.  Not to worry.

  • My DS isn't quite 3 months and half the time he rolls over to his stomach while sleeping. I leave him. I was told that once they can roll that it is okay to leave them there. I try not to worry about it, even though in the back of my mind it freaks me out.

  • My LO doesn't do this yet, but I've read in several places that once they can roll, there isn't much you can do to stop it unless you want to stay up all night rolling him back over. It's not as big of a worry now that he is older as it would have been back in 0-3.

  • My LO does the exact same thing. He will fuss bfore falling asleep because he still hasn't totally figured out how to sleep on his stomach. When he does, I leave him until he cries to roll over but he ends up on his stomach again anyway. Yeah it's been a fun and sleepless past few nights Smile
  • Our little one sleeps so much better on his stomach, but I was a nervous wreck.  We invested in an Angelcare monitor.  It measures slight  movement (like his chest rising and falling from breathing)and an alarm goes off it there isn't any movement for 20 seconds. He squirms all over the place at night and we have never had a false alarm either.

It has been a life changer!  He sleeps through the night and if I ever wake up and want to check on him I can see on the monitor that he is breathing.  I wish I had gotten it sooner. =)
