Has anyone with PCOS experienced excessive yawning or shortness of breath?

I was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago and am now on Clomid/Metforin/Progesterone to try and help conceive. Over the past few years, I started experiencing shortness of breath when I feel like I can't take a full breath. I also yawn excessively to try and get a gulp of air. It could just be when I am sedentary or when I am working out. I am 33, in good shape, and have been tested for lung problems and asthma (all ruled out). One doctor told me it was just anxiety. Although anxiety meds didn't seem to do the trick either. I read that PCOS and anxiety (trouble breathing) could be related, and am wondering if others have experienced similar symptoms and what they have done about it?

  • it could be what is called "air hunger" and it goes along with thyroid issues. have you ever had your thyroid tested? PCOS is a diagnosis that goes hand in hand with thyroid issues as well; I would get tested as soon as you can. if you google Air hunger+ thyroid, it should give you some good info. HTH!

  • Ok, I have PCOS and I actually have experinced this whole difficulty taking a deep breath thing in the past.  I do the whole yawning thing too, so funny...But I NEVER would have related the two...I was told when I was younger that I had some form of asthma or something and since it's never gone as far as being scary, I've just lived with it.  DH thinks I'm stressed or suffering from a mild panic attack when it happens.  He tells me to meditate.  silly boys...

Interesting though, I don't know why this would be connected, I've had my thyroid checked a million times and it's fine...maybe is just one of those quirky things?

  • Thank you so much!! I will ask my doctor about air hunger for sure. I really appreciate the advice - I have been feeling so desperate! Best of luck to you!
  • I am so glad you responded - it is comforting to know that others are experiencing this too. Although I am sorry b/c I know how frustrating it can be! I never would have put the 2 together either, but was doing some research the other day and found a few articles that said their could be a connection since PCOS impacts your hormones, and the yawning/shortness of breath is likely related to a hormone issue in your thyroid. Also, people with PCOS can be prone to high anxiety (beyond that related to TTC - I've been feeling like this loing before I even knew i had PCOS).

I have also been told before that it is just anxiety and I should deal with it, but I never felt that was the whole story. All the doctors said I was fine... I have been dealing with it too, but it can be so hard. I don't know why this is such a mystery!

My husband also thinks that I am just anxious and that i should "relax". I can't!! Alot of the time the yawning/breathing issues happen when I AM relaxed. (Although that always elevates my stress levels of course b/c then i can't breathe.) It really seems to be out of my control. It happens when I am sedentary and when i wam working out.

Anyway, if you learn anything more please let me know. I will do the same. Thank you again for chiming in!
