C/S moms, should I try and stay in hospital as long as possible?

My son will be 14m old when baby arrives, and its going to be a confusing time for him since I won't be able to hold him and considering I'm a SAHM he's use to me holding him a lot, I also do his naps and most bed times.  H will be taking a couple weeks off work so he'll be home to help, and the week before I plan on having H take over DS's night routine every night so that hopefully when thats how its going when baby is home he won't think its because of her.

I like the idea of going home asap, but I think I'd be best to stay the full 3 days in the hospital since its going to be hard to rest at home with DS wanting my attention.  I figure I'll ask my Dr. about it when I go in next.  When I was in the hospital w/#1, the Dr. who checked on me on Day 2 wanted to release me, but me and H weren't ready to do it on our own yet so we stayed the 3 days.

 Opinions?

  • my sister had 2 c/s and said she was happy to stay as long as she could with both.

  • I plan on staying the full 4 days after this LO c/s.  I figure its better to fully rest and recoup at the hospital than to go home and overdue it and end up back in the hospital or with a longer recouperation.  Good luck!

  • I stayed the full 3 days and plan to do so this time around too. 3 days really flies by. You'll need whatever rest you can get and it will give you a few days to bond with the baby.

  • I would say yes, it's best to stay the 3 full days.

My OB also said I could be released on day 2, but a few hours before I would be going home my BP spiked and I had to stay an extra day. I ended up staying close to 4 days because of other issues (BP, spinal headache).

  • I requested an early discharge when I had DS and I did fine. I missed DD a lot and I was bored out of my mind. This time, I'm not sure how I'll feel so I'm keeping an open mind. If I'm feeling as well as I did after my 2nd c-section I might ask to leave early, but I'm also a SAHM so I might let DH get a peek into my daily life and stay as long as I can.

  • I vote for you to take all 3 days as well.

When I had DD I planned on leaving asap.  But due to complications I was actually there 5 days.  And I'm so glad I did stay. (Wish there wasn't complications though)  Having that extra time to rest and not worry about anything was great.  Not to mention all the help.  Not sure if you will have family members around to help you out or not.  Plus our house is 2 stories.  So to put off the stairs was good too.  (Impossible to stay on one floor)

  • stay as long as you can.  I leave on day 4. You can't do much with your toddler anyway and since you have a toddler you are not goint to have that "sleep when the baby sleeps" luxury.  I swear I think there were a few days I was up for 24 hours straight.  So relax in thehospital.

  • I was in almost the exact same situation when I delivered DS. DD was fifteen months old- and she actually did beautifully with the whole situation- as a note; I am SO glad I had the kids close together- they didn't play a lot together until DS was a year or so, but now they are inseparable. :-) But back to your original question- I would recommend staying as long as you can. Rest. Bond with the new baby. Relax. Enjoy the fact that you don't have to worry about getting dinner or anything. I will be having my third in February (another c/s) and I will be staying the full three days again.

  • I had a repeat c/s with DD (LO#2), and my OB offered to release me early if I was recovering well.  I opted to stay the 3 days because I knew that would be the most rest I would get for a while.  DS was 18.5 months when DD was born.  I recommend staying.  You get more rest, you get meals, you can send your LO to the nursery, and you get all the help you need with your new baby, without having to also take care of a young toddler.

I agree that it's probably best to stay. I also left on day two with DD. I know I'll probably be itching to this time too, because I hated being at the hospital. However, I'm going to try and stay an extra day this time. I tend to over do it...

  • I stayed 3.5 days and it felt too long emotionally but not long enough physically.  The minute I got home I was trying to do dishes, and put everything in my house back how I like it after a week of my mom being there running the show.  I would rest at the hospital as long as you can!
