Choking on Saliva/Mucous... scary!

DS fell asleep on my shoulder after eating. I left him there for about an hour, then went to lay him down.  Once I did, he immediately woke up, with this panicked cry and expression on his face, then... silence.  He was choking and not clearing it.

 Luckily I had the bulb suction thing nearby and I cleared his mouth and nose.  Anyone else experience this?  I don't really know what caused it and it scared the bejesus out of me!

    That happened to me with my first, when she was just a day or two old. It was really scary.

    I always keep the bulb thing close by for that reason!

    DD#2 will occasionally look like she's choking on spit up, but always seems to get it out okay.

    Just happened a few days ago.  I didn't have the bulb syringe around.  I ended up throwing her over my arm and pounding her back.  She finally cleared it by projectilling all over the floor. It took about ten years off my life.  The scariest part was the utter look of panic on her face, and the way her eyes almost bugged out.  It was HORRIBLE!!!!

    Happened to my lo one too... in her sleep... used the bulb thingie and also kept her over my shoulder to get all of it out!  Hasn't happened again, but it scared the hell out of me... not to mention how bad I felt because of lo's look of terror!

    Abbey has done this a couple of times. The first resulting in a trip to the ER where the doctor assured me that he has never seen a child aspirate on its vomit because their throat automatically closes off to keep it out of their lungs. This, however, does not make you feel better when they are gasping for air and kicking their little feet like they are about to take their last breath! That was the most awful feeling in the world and the second and third time that she did it, it took about 20-30 minutes to get her calm enough to catch her breath. 

    Now I keep a bulb syringe in every room of the house and one in the diaper bag just in case. I don't think that there is anything that you can do to prevent it. Abbey still spits up A LOT but, she hasn't been choking on it.
