Just curious...do your LOs watch TV?

Obviously, the subject title says it all.  I totally don't judge if you do or do not, I'm just curious.

My daughter has some Sesame Street puppets which she really loves, so I've wondered if maybe occasionally she might like to watch Big Bird in action.

  • Not often, but LO loves Spongebob.

  • No, I don't put anything on for him purposefully- though I don't turn it off with him in the room with us. So while he sees it in the background, it's not something I feel comfortable using as entertainment for him yet.

  • Claire pink puffy heart loves the weather channel.

My H works on the water so we monitor the weather pretty closely...we usually have the NOAA forecast on the radio or the weather channel on in the background.

She's not really into to anything kid-oriented yet.

Honestly, as long as it's not being used as a substitute for actually interactng with your kid, I have no problem with television.

  • Yes! Sometimes on purpose (I'll face him toward the TV and have on Sesame Street, Yo Gabba Gabba, or even this Fresh Beat Band show or something like that - it's always while on the activity mat, in jumperoo, or in swing - never just sitting there idly watching TV by himself).

And sometimes it's not on purpose, just cause we have the TV on and he loves to watch the colors and all.

I try to keep it to a minimum though because I know it's not ideal for him.

ETA: for clarification - didn't want it to seem like I plop my kid in front of the tube and call it a day.

  • I never put her down to "watch" tv - although it is on in the background when she's on her mat playing, in her jumperoo, playing with us, nursing, etc...so sometimes she stares up at whatever is on.  Pretty sure she can't tell what's actually on there yet - it's mounted above the fireplace.  If she can tell - she's gonna be a great cook & foodie ~ we watch lots of food network!

  • DH is adamant about no TV. DS does get to watch baseball games when they are on but nothing else unless it's on in the background.

  • Max watches Mickey Mouse.  He loves that freakin' mouse!  I don't let him watch a lot of TV, but when he watches it I try to talk to him and make it interactive rather than mindless distraction.  DH watched F1 with him on Sundays.  He seems to lke the colorful cars zipping past.

  • Up until this weekend he had only seen baseball and snippets of my trashy reality obsession. This weekend, DH was sick and had him watching Blue's on the ipad, so I went ahead and introduced Yo Gabba Gabba- mainly bc I wanted DH to see how insane it is. We don't have cable, so TV is limited at our house regardless.

  • On a rare occasion, we watch Yo Gabba Gabba with her -i.e. she's on our lap, and we sing with the t.v. songs and talk to her about the show throughout. Otherwise, the only t.v. she ever sees is just background of something we're watching while she eats, etc.

K LOVES the weather channel!! She also watches NASCAR with her daddy on sundays.

We try not to have A watch television for the most part.  I do, however, turn it on when I cut her nails.  She's easily glued to the screen (no matter what is on), and it's the only way I can keep her still enough to cut the darn things without turning her fingers and toes into bloody stumps.
    Yep, I do this, too!

This is us as well. He gets some but it's while we are with him and still interacting. He doesn't get plopped down in front of it in his bouncer or anything like that.

    This exactly.

  • He loves to stare at it if I have him playing in one of his things in the living room like his jumperoo, so I usually end up turning a kid show on. If he's in one of those things though, I usually keep him engaged with me, I don't let him tune into it for an extended period of time.  I should probably just turn it off sometimes but it's habit here - TV is usually on.

On Mondays he watches quite a bit because my mom watches him here and enjoys putting shows on for him. She does not use it as something for him to entertain himself with though, she genuinely enjoys keeping him in her lap, talking to him about the shows, singing with him etc.  She is so animated and playful with him he probably barely notices the show lol.

  • yep, DS probably gets a 20 minute does of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse once a day.  Usually it's in the morning while I'm trying to finish getting ready or get his bottles/food ready for daycare.  He loves Mickey...LOVES Mickey!  Any other cartoon and he could really care less, but all he has to do is hear the Mickey Mouse theme song and he perks right up wondering where it is.  It's kinda cute!  (And it's been an absolute lifesaver during teething meltdowns...we try everything we can before we use Mickey, but a few times Mickey has saved the day!)
  • DD likes to watch whatever I'm watching. She especially likes Price is Right and the news. haha. She usually doesn't get up until 11:30, so she gets up and eats and then we sit in bed together and talk while I eat lunch and watch the end of price is right and the news. she's not very social when she first gets up, so even though I've got her facing me she still cranes her neck around to see the tv.

I Bump from my phone 90% of the time, with a baby in my lap, so please excuse my bad format and poor spelling and/or punctuation.
  • LO is not allowed to watch TV and we avoid background TV. We avoid TV for LO because the impact on marketing susceptibility (marketing to babies is a suprisingly huge, creepy industry), reduced attention span, and increased aggression (even educational shows are shown to increase aggression because of the time a show spends on characters in conflict versus time in peace/making up). The books Nurture Shock, Buy Buy Baby, and Consuming Kids plus the AAP's stance of zero TV under the age of 2 have shaped our opinion.

Sometimes background TV is unavoidable, like if we are at a restaurant that has TVs (a phenomenon that totally irritates me) or at a  particular friend's' house who is really into watching every sports game. And we do sometimes watch a movie when LO is asleep but in the same room.

  • DS watches mickey mouse clubhouse (one episode) while he jumps in his jumperoo and I get breakfast together. 25 minutes while he's occupied physically is nbd IMO. It's not hours on end and he gets so excited when he sees Mickey in the intro.

  • She has always loved to watch hockey! DH choses to think it's because she's his daughter of course! I think it's more the fast movement and contrast of bright white ice and dark jerseys.

Other than that, it's just on in the background.

  • Right now, K gets to watch mommy do the 30 Day Shred every day. It's his "punishment" for not taking naps. Other than that sometimes he will watch when it's on in the background, but most the time not. We have a "rule" about not turning on the tv in our house until 6pm. I guess K watches Jeopardy with us too... he loves it and I guess I did when I was a baby too. lol

  • We don't have cable or satellite or anything like that. I borrowed some Baby Einstein movies we will watch sometime.
I feel fine with her watching Baby Einstein. I am picky about other shows, though, which is actually why we never got cable/satellite/etc...
I watch things on Hulu sometimes, and if she's awake, it's probably when I'm feeding her. She isn't interested in tv usually.

    This. I guess I would consider a little commercial-free TV after 2.

I am going to check these books out.  I have read a little about marketing to babies (I work in marketing) and I do find it really creepy.  Thanks.

  • X will sometimes get entranced by whatever we happen to have on while we're playing with him. He seemed to enjoy watching the Gold Cup finals over the weekend. Sunday morning I sat down with him and watched a Blue's Clues rerun. He smiled through it all and even seemed to try to respond when Steve asked questions- probably just a coincidence but I'm going to pretend he's gifted for right now Stick out tongue
