Working Moms/Pumping...

Alright, I'm a teacher and go back mid August.  I pump and BF, and DS does well with both breast and bottle.  When I go back, I have off 2 periods a day, 2nd hour and 8th hour (last period of the day), and then, I have a short lunch 5th hour.  DS eats about every 2-3 hours right now.  He is 2 months and will be about 4 when I go back.  Will I have to pump all of those periods, just 2nd and 8th (5 hours apart...), or just 5th?  I have a friend who plans on just doing it once mid day.  Would that be enough?  Any suggestions are welcomed!  Thanks!!!  I really want to be successful.  I will have to pump in a small bathroom or utility closet..boo!

Re: Working Moms/Pumping...

  • It depends on whether you want DS to still be EBF or if you just want to keep up your supply.  If it's the later, you should be good just pumping once a day to keep up supply and relieve discomfort.  If it's the former, I would guess you'll need to pump all 3 times.  When I was pumping and EBFing I actually had to pump more often than DD would eat b/c I got less when pumping than she would get nursing.  I ended up adding an extra pumping session around 3 hours after she went to bed just to keep up with her demand.

  • i went back to teaching when ds was 6 months old and i was pumping and ebf.  i found that my supply did decrease even though i was pumping as often as he was eating, so for me i pumped any chance i got even if it was just for 10 min.  it was worth it for me to invest in a small mini fridge to keep my pump parts in between sessions so that i didn't have to wash them.  it cut out tons of time.  i would just store them in an opaque tupperware lidded bowl and then taken them home to wash them each night.

  • Plan on pumping all three times; you never know how the stress of going back to work and pumping instead of nursing will affect your supply. If you don't need to do all 3, then you can drop one as needed.

Sucky that you have to pump in a bathroom or closet. :(

  • Okay, I will.  Thanks!
