WWYD? IVF Question

I am 40 and DH is 42. We have an 18 mo old DS we conceived naturally the first time. We had been trying for #2 for a couple of months, went to an RE where we found out it is DH motility and morph that is the issue. A urologist thinks it is because of a varicocle and if he had surgery it would be about 6 months for recovery to see any improvement. We have completed classes for IVF/ICSI  but I'm worried about twins. I'm wondering, should we do the surgery then try naturally on our own and wait until the fall to naturally try again or just go for the IVF/ICSI/ Any thoughts? Anyone had similar experience?

Re: WWYD? IVF Question

  • Personally, I would wait the 6 months if they feel the surgery will improve the situation.  IVF/ICSI is NOT fun and can be physcially, emotionally and financially draining.  What were your DH's counts if you dont mind me asking--what about IUI??  I know age may be a factor in your case, but I would avoid IVF if there is still a strong shot at concieveing naturally.  Thats just my opinion though. Good luck!!

Severe MFI resulting in IVF/ICSI #1 in Nov 2007. BFP!!
Our beautiful son was born July 2008.
    2010: 2 IVF's,1 FET = 2 BFN's, 1 c/p :(
    Feb 2011-Unmedicated FET= BFP!! DS #2 born Oct 2011!!.

1% morphology, I forgot what the motility is but is really bad that ins will cove his icsi. How old are you?

  • We also had morphology and motility issues and tried IUIs first due to a lack of insurance coverage.  Two "worked" but didn't stick and one did not work at all.  After changing insurance companies at open enrollment, we did one round of IVF, had two early blastocysts implanted, and one stuck.  The goal at the fertility clinic we go to is always one healthy baby.  Yes, there are risks of twins but it's pretty low.  Have you spoken to a reproductive endocrinologist about what they think would be best?

Pretty much we can not say exactly what to do, I have a good FSH 6.2 but my age and egg "quality" are questionable. They will not have a better sense until ET and if any make day 5. How old are you?
