Better alternative to Gerber graduates?

Are there any better/healthier alternatives to the Gerber graduate meals?  I mostly make LO's food at home but occasionally, llike on our road trip this weekend, it makes sense to have stuff already packaged for him. And the sodium count seems cah-rah-zy on these Gerber meals- anyone know of any other options?  Thanks!

Re: Better alternative to Gerber graduates?

  • We just got back from a trip and I tried to mostly feed DD "adult" food, like fruit, veggies, and little pieces of what DH and I were eating. We had jarred foods with us but she didn't eat them nearly as well as she does with homemade baby food. Since you're going on the road, could you take some things from home in tupperware in a cooler? We flew so we didn't really have that option. Also, I prefer Earth's Best organic baby food to Gerber. The Gerber packaging is annoying and messy.

  • If you have a cooler, I would make my own pasta with chicken and veggies, hummus and pita, etc.  I also recommend the Plum Tots/Happy Baby Organic Pouches.  Also, YoBaby Meals are great for travel.
  • PP's have some good recommendations. Are you looking for "meals" or just snacks?

Cheese sticks (we cut our own and put them in baggies but you could by string cheese), Whole Grain crackers, Steam veggies like squash, broccoli, etc. and pack those now that they are soft. At that age we would make soy butter and banana sandwichs a lot. I have recently fell in love with the organic fruit/veggie pouches. Some soft granola bars.

Good Luck. There are tons of options out there for you.

  • I definitely second the YoBaby suggestion. We can't find the YoBaby meals at stores near us but my mom found them in Charlotte, NC and Nora loved them.
  • Thanks ladies!  I know making his meals it he best option but for an 11+ hour car trip I just don't want to deal with a cooler, etc- so I'll have to go check out some of your recommendations.  Thanks again!
