Middle of the night wakings- how do I stop this?

I don't complain about sleep very much b/c I know that compared to most babies, we have been SPOILED.  Both of my kids love to sleep.  Sophie is just like Gavin in that she goes to sleep easily on her own for naps and at night.  In fact, she was even easier to sleep train than he was.  I just laid her down in her crib one night while I gave him a bath and then when I came back, she was out.  It's been this way ever since.  But also like Gavin did, she wakes up every night to comfort nurse.  I mean, its quick and easy- she cries, I nurse her, she falls back asleep, I go back to bed.  We are talking 15 min max (except that I usually fall asleep in the chair holding her :o)  She's not up crying all night or wanting to play.  But at 7 mos, I know she doesn't really need that extra nursing session and by this point w/ Gavin we had already done CIO and broken the habit and we were all STTN.  But I worry about how to do CIO without waking Gavin up.  He is a complete pill if he gets woken up during the night and he WILL stay up.  So should I:

(a) suck it up and keep nursing her back to sleep.

(b) suck it up and deal w/ CIO and waking Gavin.

(c) other???

  • I have been surprised that when I've let Liam cry himself back to sleep that 1) it doesn't take that long and 2) it doesn't wake Evie.

The only times its taken forever was when he started to stand and I'd let him cry not realizing he couldn't get himself back down.  Now we swaddle him again.

  • this is why we have noise machines....the boys can't hear ANYTHING in their room which is right next to Kellen's room.  I personally would let her CIO, easier to break the earlier you do it!

Ditto this. We bought sound machines for each child's room specifically for Aerin's night wakings.

  • OK, maybe I'll put a noise machine in Gavin's room.  Sophie has one in her room already but Gavin listens to a classical music cd so we haven't put a noise machine in there.  Maybe I'll do the noise machine and the cd and just go for the CIO tonight.

  • All moms have their things that they are crazy about and mine is making sure my kids don't require a blanket, animal, right light, noise, etc to fall asleep.  I have an unreasonable fear of being on vacation without said item and no one going to sleep.  I know, I know, that is all a little overparanoid, but it is my crazy thing.

All that was to say, that we did a noise machine for #1 when #2 was crying it out.  I didn't turn it on until I went to bed so he didn't use it to fall asleep.  Maybe you could play the CD's and then switch to the noise machine after he is asleep.

I never had a problem with Tess waking Emma up after she went to sleep.  But Emma is a very heavy sleeper.  I also didn't nurse at night but I did have a night time feeding that we eventually dropped.  The first thing I did was stopped giving her a bottle in the middle of the night once I was sure she didn't need it.  At that point I would still pick her up and rock her back to sleep.  After a few nights of that I did the Ferber idea of not picking her up and just soothing her, letting her CIO for like a minute, go in and soothe her, let her CIO for a minute, etc.  It only took a few times the first night or two and then after that she was STTN.
  • We only used CIO with Emma after she was done nursing at night and she was just waking up for no good reason.  When we were trying to curb the middle of the night nursing sessions, I just refused to get her out of the crib.  When she fussed, I'd go in and pat her on the back, sing to her, etc. to get her to try to calm down and fall back to sleep on her own.  Eventually, she got the picture that she wasn't going to get out and she fell asleep.  Worked like a charm.  I also agree with the white noise - we've used it since night 1 and swear by it.  We use a box fan for noise (so do hubby and I!) and also keep a white noise machine that takes batteries on hand for nights if the power goes out.

  • To drop Ethan's last night feeding I did something similar to PP.  I didn't have to CIO for the night wakening but did have to for putting him down at bedtime.  He has been gold ever since.  To stop the night feeding I started going in and just soothing him from the crib, giving paci and quickly leaving.  I would wait a couple minutes to see if he would go back to sleep but not full on CIO.  Once he realized the food wasn't coming he dropped it.
