If you had an ectopic and were able to keep your tube, did you move forth with TTCing without an HSG (or anything to check your tubes)?
We considered an HSG but have to pay OOP for it, and my doctor said it's likely my ectopic was a fluke (I'm sure he was partly trying to reassure me that an HSG wasn't absolutely necessary).
We've decided to move forward with TTCing without the HSG and now that I'm approaching ovulation, I'm getting scared to try. DH isn't on board with getting the HSG for now because of the cost, but he said if it's something I really want to do we can revisit the topic.
I lurk here lots and you ladies give me so much hope! Best wishes to you all!
Re: ? from TTCer- If you had an ectopic and kept your tube...
I am so sorry for your loss. *hugs*
I had an ectopic but my tube burst so I didn't keep my tube. I know others on here/TTCAL had ectopic and didn't lose their tube. I just wanted to offer support and let you know that it took about 5 cycles for me to get pg again. I hope your heart is healing and that your body has recovered. *hugs* I did read a lot on google books [medical books, hard to sift through] and there doesn't seem to be that much of a % of second time ectopic while keeping the tube - although I didn't pay too much attention since it wasn't pertaining to me.
*hugs*
Oh, and just FYI, I got pregnant again on the third cycle after my HCG reached zero.
Im sorry for your loss. ((hugs))
I had an etopic, kept my tube. Took, methotrexate. And had no HSG. Just was told to wait 6 months before TTC again. Then when i got pregnant this time i just had betas done asap, and a u/s making sure the pregnancy was in my uterus.
I did however have to use Clomid to get pregnant. So it took me longer... But that didnt have anything to do with my tubes. I just dont ovulate on my own.
**sorry this post looks so crazy, im on my mobile...
I'm sorry for your lsos. My story is similar to Jess252's in that I had an ectopic and was treated with methotrexate. I was able to keep my tube.
We tried for 6 months after the ectopic with no results and started seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. I did have an HSG in Feb, and was pregnant in April. I also took 50 mg of clomid, as we found I was not ovulating normally. The HSG revealed that my tubes were open and everything flushed through really quickly.
On a side note, I also have an arcuate uterus, which can potentially cause issues with implantation. In total, it took 10 months for me to get pregnant again (2 months after HSG, first cycle on clomid).
An HSG is one of the first steps in infertility diagnosis and treatment, so many physicians will use this as one of the primary tests. My medical center would do it for $1,800 through insurance, but I was able to go to an imaging center for $300 and not use insurance. That is a huge cost difference, especially since the cheaper cost was without insurance! My doctor said that my medical group "does it better" but that he'd rather me save my money for the bigger tests and procedures than spend that kind of money on the HSG. Good luck!
I am sorry for your loss. EP sucks (bad enough you lose your LO, but then you have to worry about your own health). My EP was before we had DS2, treated with MTX. We TTCed several months before HSG. I had the EP in Nov, I got AF in Dec. and was cleared to TTC, but I didn't have the HSG until early April. We only TTC when we O'd from the "good" side (which was almost every time anyway), but I know not everybody takes that precaution. I wouldn't worry if you can't afford the HSG right now, maybe give it some time and if you are timing things right with no bfp, that might be something to try.
Hope your tube heals as good as new and you get a BFP as soon as your body is ready!
ETA: My EP was at the end of my tube (near the ovary) and was pretty far along (12w) before they found it (I had what I thought was my period the month before and thought I was only @ 7 weeks pg at that time) so that may be why my RE wanted me to not TTC when O from that side.
Thanks for the replies ladies! It helps to hear someone whose been in my position say it's okay to continue without the HSG.
I had the MTX injection in February and took 3 cycles off from TTCing. Last cycle was my first cycle TTCing again and I felt O pains on my right side so I assumed I was ovulating from my right side and didn't hesitate to try. This month, I am scared my body is going to switch off to the left side (following the pattern it usually does) and that is my "ectopic side"... hence the fear I'm having.
I got a BFP my first cycle TTCing in August '10, which ended in a chemical pregnancy. On cycle 6, I got another BFP but it was ectopic. It seems I don't have much difficulty getting pregnant, I just haven't had a healthy pregnancy. My husband lost his daughter in the 3rd trimester about 5 years ago (in a previous relationship), so he is saying he's calling it quits if we have another loss. I'm really hoping our 3rd BFP comes soon and it's a "3rd time's the charm" sort of thing.
Okay. Rambling.
Thank you again ladies and congrats on your pregnancies!
You never know. I always switched sides before EP, but after EP I O'd from my "good side" 8 times in a row. Try not to be too fearful (I know it is hard after EP). Good luck!
Edit: deleted long text because of exact same double post
First of all, I am so sorry for your loss! My first doctor (who dx'd the ectopic) did not want me to get an HSG done. She felt based on the success I had with the methotrexate (I was back to <5 HCG in 3.5 weeks), that she was confident my tube was ok.
My new doctor suggested just looking into if insurance would pay for it. They did & it was 100% covered. So I just went ahead and did it. I have never posted my HSG story on the TTCAL board, because it would scare the heck out of anyone!!! My experience was awful...intense pain during (my cervix wouldn't open, so the doc basically had to manually open it), then about 5 min after he was done, I was violenty ill/vomiting, dizzy, shaking, & in unbearable pain for about two hours after...not fun! So, even though that seems to be rare & a possible allergic reaction, I vote no HSG if you don't have to have one
I also had issues with short luteal phase & not ovulating/long cycles, so my new OB moved to Clomid + Profasi (HCG shot) medicated (& u/s monitored) cycles. We conceived our 2nd cycle with 100mg Clomid/day 3-7 & 10,000 units of HCG/Profasi shot. The best part about monitored cycles via u/s is you know what side you are ovulating from- I was my "good" side both cycles. B/w (I had to request from doc) on day 23 of cycle I conceived showed low progesterone too, and I went on suppositories immediately when I found out I was pg. Hope my book of a story helps some- good luck & hope to see you here for 9 months very soon!!!
Thank you! And congrats on your pregnancy!
