A question about living in Seattle... humidity??

I hear that it "rains all the time". I have lived in Ireland and Holland and they get the same label. I wanted to ask, is your home humid? Do you have problems with mold? I gather it isn't very warm and so you are not running your AC all the time which would pull out the moisture.  Do you find that you use your heater in summer months too?

Just trying to figure out what kind of things might be important to look for regarding climate control in the home for our house hunting trip.

THANKS!

Re: A question about living in Seattle... humidity??

  • My house isn't humid. It has no mold problems.  It doesn't have AC. We stopped using the heater in early May.

There isn't a lot of rain all the time.  Lack of sunshine is far more accurate.

  • I lived in Germany and the weather here is very similar to that part of Europe. It is more of a misty rain and the summer is fairly dry. I don't think it's very humid in our house (I moved here from Florida a few years ago, so my views on humidity may actually be a little skewed). Our only problem with mold is in our bathroom; the rest of the house is fine. We don't use our heater during the summer months (although we did the first summer we were here because we were used to Florida heat.) And we don't have an AC. You'll find that a lot of houses here don't. It's really not necessary and we only wish we had one maybe 2-3 days a year. Good luck house hunting!

  • It's doesn't rain a ton.  We just have a lot of days of drizzle all winter long and it creeps into spring more than we'd like.   But in the summer it hardly rains at all.   And it's not humid the way you think of like Florida or something... it's that hot sticky humidity where mold thrives.  When it's warm here, it's dry.  We don't generally have mold issues in homes unless there's water damage from broken pipes or leaking foundations.   We have forced air heat and we actually do have central AC too.  I love it.  But only because I'm a wimp about hot weather now that I've lived here for 15 years.  It's really only hot enough to want AC a couple of weeks in the summer, but if you have AC you'll use it more and be happy about it.

  • My whole family is Dutch, and I've been told that it is very very similar.  In fact, that is what brought all four grandparents to this region (after suffering the heat of Cali :)

  • I agree with pp's.  The humidity isn't bad really.  I'm from Chicago and the humidity here is nothing.  Most properties here do not have AC.  It's really not standard.  I was used to always having AC from growing up in the midwest.  We bought a portable AC unit during a really hot summer.  As Jill said, I'm a wimp about heat, too.  It's only warm and sunny here for a couple months.  I just prefer the rest of the year.

I lived in southwestern England for a while and it's quite similar to the weather there.

In terms of mold, I will say it can be an issue.  My DH's job includes mold inspection and it does happen.  It's mainly due to leaks from outside from rain (that can be repaired) or lack of ventilation in bathrooms.  As a renter here, I've had to sign a mold agreement stating I'll run the exhaust fan in the bathroom, when showering, and watch windows for mold and clean as needed.  I'd never seen agreements like that in IL.  However, I've never had a mold issue and I've been here for almost 9 yrs, and lived in 7 places.

  • Coming from California I actually find the weather here drier. My hair did way weirder things in California, and even in Egypt. I agree with other's mold isn't a big issue unless there was some leak inside the house.
