crying/protesting naptime

A couple times in the last week or so Henry has cried when I put him down for nap and/or walked around the crib and refused to lay down.  Both times I've managed to coax him into settling down by giving him a favorite toy to take into the crib and he does eventually fall asleep and sleep for 2-3 hours, as normal.

Anyone else's LO display this behavior? I'm just wondering if it's a sign he needs a later naptime. For almost a year now he's been eating lunch at ~11am and going down for a nap afterward, so around 11:45am.

I know I could just try pushing it and see, but I so hate to upset the apple cart! This schedule has been working so well for so long!

(This is why I posted the toddler naptime poll the other day.)

Re: crying/protesting naptime

  • Jacob does this pretty much for every naptime and every bedtime.  There's not a ton of protest - he usually quiets down in a few minutes.  But before then he doesn't want to go into the crib, asks for a million different things before going down and simply says "I no nap, Mommy."

I usually just plop him in his bed after his normal thing - diaper change, reading a few books - and he quiets down in a few minutes.  Right now, he's in there laughing at his Elmo shoes (Elmo slippers).  Whatever.  He'll calm down and fall asleep.  FWIW - he eats lunch around noon and goes into his crib usually around 1pm.

Today it wasn't too bad, but last week he screamed his bloody head off for 30 mins. Both times it took me giving him his Lightning McQueen car to settle him down--and of course that stupid thing has choking hazard so then I hve to watch him like a hawk on the monitor until he falls asleep, then sneak in and fetch it out of the crib.

Maybe I do need to push it back a bit. I know Jacob is a little older than Henry, but Henry also sleeps later in the morning (he was up at 7:30am this morning).

  • Typically, G goes down for nap and bed easily. Since we got home from our trip out West, he cries when I put him in his crib. Before this, from the age of six or seven months, he wanted into his crib ASAP, minimal cuddling. Now, he wants to snuggle and sing songs. I timed him today, it took him 10 minutes of protesting before he settled down. Personally, I think he gets this way when he is teething molars. The only other time he has been like this was when, I believe, he was getting his first set of molars.

You could try pushing lunch and nap back 20-30 minutes, but I think that he'll work through this phase regardless. Good luck. It's hard to listen to your LO cry, knowing they need their nap!

How pathetic is it that I would give my right arm for him to sleep until 7:30?!  :)

Would it make you feel better if I told you we went through a six-month long phase when H was waking at 5:30am sharp?

I think we all go through a stint in the crack-of-dawn club. Stick out tongue

  • that happened to Ava a couple times the past couple years. Naptime was going great, then HUGE protest. I did bump her down later about 45 minutes, a couple of times. That seemed to work.

Once we yanked the paci a lil 'after age 3, she just couldn't calm herself down enough to still nap. BUT she continues to have "quiet time" with her ipod-playing movies or shows. Or book time.
