Can you spray down carseat fabric w/ fabric protector?

So DH asked me today if it would make sense to spray down the boys' car seats w/ fabric protector spray to help w/ stains and such.

A part of me wants to say No, since it's likely that fabric was treated for fire-resistance of some sort, but then.... if you're spot cleaning it/washing it over time, doesn't that fire-retardation fade?

Thoughts?

  • I don't know how we've managed it, but we only provide kiddo water in the car.  Most of our daily trips wouldn't require food stuffs being brought along.  Longer trips, we plan for meal stops and bring along "unstainable" foods.

DH is a bit of a clean freak so for instance, Grape Juice, would NEVER be allowed near the cars, and I even get a sideways glance when we order that when eating out.

Because of the clean-freak-ness, the car seats have stayed relatively healthy and clean.  We do regular washing on delicate cycle with Woolite or some gentle detergent equivalent and hang dry.

Crumb-age, that's a different story.  Cheerios and other un-sticky crackers, etc do get brought in the car if we're running errands when a snack time will hit.  Drives DH batty, but it's necessary sometimes.

That's not really answering your question, so I'll stop rambling and say that because we regularly wash ours, I don't think a stain protectant would hurt.

  • I'm not sure.  I wouldn't though.  The car seat sits in a hot car about 50% of the year and I don't want DS sitting on it after a fabric protector gets hot.  I buy in dark colors, wash when necessary and hope for the best.  So far so good.

  • I would think so, although they may already have some sort of protectant on them. We've never had a problem getting stains out of our Britax seats. (And Eli gets carsick alot, so I've had a lot of experience.)

  • I don't necessarily see any problem with spraying it in terms of flammability, but I probably wouldn't do it unless absolutely necessary because a lot of fabric protector sprays have chemicals I'd rather minimize in terms of exposure to LO.  I can't remember where I read it but I recall stuff like scotch guard being bad for kiddos for some reason.

I'd be hesitant for this reason too. But then again we're the nuts who don't get our furniture Scotchgarded to minimize our kitties' exposure, and then have extra work when something gets spilled. If I recall correctly, BPA is the issue.
