Braxton Hicks at 23 weeks....?

Im just curious if anyone has/recalls having BH at around 23ish weeks.  Ive been having 3-5 a day in the past couple days...normal?  Should I tell my doc?  Im just really paranoid in this particular phase of the pregnancy....I just wish i could be like 28+ weeks already.  ugh

Re: Braxton Hicks at 23 weeks....?

  • I had an irritable uterus and started having them at 18 weeks.  My doctor told me not to worry, rest, drink more water, and contact her if I started bleeding or leaking fluid or if they became painful.  I had them all the way up to when I delivered full term.  I don't know that it is normal, but I think it is really common.

Thanks--I recall having them with DS, but not unti the 3rd trimester.  I almost WANT to get checked out, you know.  I would rather know if this is affecting my cervix before its too late rather than wait to see if I start bleeding.  I know the likelyhood of it being anything 'dangerious' is slim....ugh....not sure what tot hink

  • Mine started at 19 weeks with Patrick and I at 15 weeks with this pregnancy.  I really can't stand them and I <try> to drink lots of water but I know I could do better.  I am not overly concerned because my pregnancy with Patrick was riddled with BH ctxs until the end without dilating me.  But if they become more concerning, definitely let your MD know.  Drink and rest!

  • I did (and would again) call and ask for a quick cervix check.  I am sure you are fine, but it will put your mind at ease.  I was so worried about seeming like a crazy pregnant lady, so I worried a lot and lost sleep over the contractions.  Next pregnancy, I am not going to care what anyone thinks.

It is so not a big deal for them to do a quick check, they shouldn't mind at all.  And if they do mind, tough!  If it puts your mind at ease that is all that matters.  Call in the morning and get checked. Good luck!!

  • I had braxton hicks frequently with my second pregnancy.  And earlier.

I think part of it was knowing what to expect, and what they were.  With my first, I thought it was just the baby pushing on my belly to make it hard:)

  • I have been having them for about a month now and I am 2 weeks behind you.

This, mine started at 12 weeks :(  I can't remember the numbers but there are rules of thumb for when to start to worry a smidge...like x in a hour before x number of weeks and then the number goes up as you get further along and more likely to have BH.  Also, if they start picking up, you are can drink a glass of water and lay down on your left side for an hour to calm them.   (and what was that recent article that someone posted about how a glass of wine can ease BH?  that sounds like a much more fun way to do it!)
  • I noticed BH a lot earlier with my second pregnancy as well.  I think it was mostly because I could recognize them as opposed to blaming it on the baby pushing out or something like that.  Mine started at 14w and went strong all the way through my pregnancy (at least 1 an hour but often up to 4 or 5).  It was really, really annoying but they werent doing anything to my cervix so my docs werent concerned.  I ended up delivering late so early BH dont mean much in terms of when your baby comes.  I just had an irritable uterus.

  • I had them on Thursday night, at 16 weeks.  I was surprised, too, but my m/w said your uterus starts contracting at the very beginning of pregnancy, you just can't feel it until later.

Mine started with DS (#1) at 16-18 weeks.  They had me come in and get checked for UTI and cervix check and all was fine.  I went to L and D twice (once around 20 weeks, once around 27 weeks) for having more than 6 an hour for a few hours despite resting and water, and again all was well.  I was SO worried that I would have even more with DD (#2), but I didn't have any with her until the end.  I had an anterior placenta so I think I couldn't feel them as much.  With my DS, any time he kicked me or moved around, I would contract!

Good luck!  I think they are totally common, but definitely talk to your OB about them, and come up with guidelines for when to call or go in!
