It drives me crazy! Anyone else notice how many people do not wash their hands after they use the restroom? At work, we have a Purell dispenser in the bathroom and some people only use that rather than washing their hands with soap and water. I am a Purell fan, don't get me wrong, but only when soap and water are not readily available. I've heard people say they can't use the soap because it dries out their hands. Ever heard of lotion?!?!? I know there may be some people who are allergic to the soap here, but I've also seen where people have brought in their own soap and left it in there. Yes, it is a pain and that stinks, but I want to applaud them for finding a solution to bringing out the toilet germs and exposing them to the rest of us! It just drives me nuts! I don't want their filthy germs!
OK, rant over. Thanks for listening.

It grosses me out as well.
On Friday, I walked into our ladies room and there was someone in another stall. While I was in mine peeing, they were done doing their business and the next thing I heard was the door to the bathroom closing ! That means she didn't even stop to wash ! (AND, we don't have a Purell so that means she didn't do anything). ICK !!!

sometimes I dont wash my hands after using a public washroom if the sink appears really dirty. When I use the toilet, my hands dont touch it - only the toilet paper and my self. I would rather have my own germs than the ones that are growing around the sink.
However, if I go number 2- definite wash hands. And if the sink area is clean, I wash my hands.
I don't know think there's a diffference in cleanliness as far as killing bacteria, but I've noticed that a lot of times when people use a hand sanitizer, they only use it on their palms, opposed to on the whole hand (palm and back) when they use soap and water.
I don't think I've ever peed on the back of my hand.
Purell doesn't kill all bacteria, c. difficile is resistant to it.
A women I used to work with never washed her hands, but always brought in food to the office. My co-worker and I never ate it. I can't imagine she washed her hands at home before baking if she doesn't after going to the washroom at work -- so gross!!
Washing your hands physically removes dirt and bacteria, whereas Purell just kills it. Like PitaBread said too, Purell isn't effective against killing all the "bad bugs" out there. That said, Purell is better than nothing and you do have to wash your hands correctly, (not just wet rub, rinse and be done, you have to scrub a few seconds), for soap and water to be effective.

I agree with this. Not to mention, soap obviously has detergents and is best used with hot water, while the Purell is basically concentrated alcohol. Both will work to kill bacteria, but Purell won't get everything, and isn't effective against some viruses. So, I still think not washing your hands, especially when you're in a bathroom shared by many people like in a workplace is disgusting.
As someone said up thread, it is not easy to coat your hands with Purell thoroughly enough, each finger, palms, etc. to match what happens when you wash your hands.
lol. I did once while giving my pee sample at the OB's. I had to go reeeeaaaally bad and my aim suffered
The back of the hand can still pick up a ton of bacteria and viruses- just not necessarily from the specific act of going to the bathroom. I was raised to just wash my hands periodically throughout the day, so I'm maybe more conscious of it. The reasoning in my house as a kid was that you touch "dirty" things all the time (putting on your shoes, taking out the garbage, touching your face, etc) so washing your hands at least everytime you went to the bathroom was a good way to keep everyone healthy. Come to think of it, wouldn't peeing on your hands kill at least some of the bacteria
(Totally kidding- I just grossed myself out!)

I'm a germ-phobe. There I said it
I'm the one you see grabbing a lysol wipe before I touch the cart, I use a paper towel to open the door handles in public places, I wash my hands religiously. I'm very allergic to almost all soaps (it's the sodium lauryl sulfate in them) so I found a brand that doesn't contain SLS or fragrance or anything else and I brought into work, I also carry a small travel size in my purse and use it when using public restrooms.
At work I wash my hands when someone pays with cash before I touch anything else (I work in insurance, it only happens like 5 times a day) I'm a little paranoid, but hey!
My step-daughters weren't raised with this mentality, they HATE washing their hands but I make them. My son also washes his hands all the time, I make them all sing either the happy birthday song or the alphabet under warm water.
