Success after IF

DS's 2nd eye muscle surgery is tomorrow (longish)

This will be the second surgery, so, as far as the actual procedure, I'm not nearly as nervous about it as I was the first time. It is to fix his crossed-eyes (congenital infantile esotropia), and while the first surgery dramatically helped, his eyes are not yet straight. Hopefully this will be it!

What I am anxious about is keeping him from rubbing his eyes afterward. If he rubs too hard it could damage the eye by ripping the stitches out. Last time they gave us arm braces so that he couldn't bend his elbow to rub. It worked okay, but he busted out of them often -and at that point he was a fairly relaxed nine month old. Now, at nearly 18 months...I can barely contain him. His head always has some sort of bruise/knot, and he is a bit of a risk taker with the climbing.

I asked the nurses if they had suggestions, and they did not, just told me to "keep a better eye on him." Ha! Yeah right! We all know that toddlers will do what they want, no matter how closely you are watching them.

Anyway, if you have any spare thoughts tomorrow, I'd appreciate them:) Also, any suggestions on how to retrain a toddler, I'll take those, too! Seriously, I even asked if they had straight jackets for kids!

ETA: Here are some photos of our journey so far.

We have to restrain him for at least 3-4 days:( I edited the privacy on the FB pics, try again!

  • I still can't get the link to work...

3-4 days!?!  wow...i'm sending him lots of sleepy, laid back vibes (and a bottle of wine for you! :))

  • Too bad they don't make cone for kids like they have for pets! Is he old enough to bribe him? Will his glasses fit over the bandage? That might serve as a reminder. Man, this is tough. *I* would have trouble keeping my own hands off my eye. . . . Is he apt to try to rub it in his sleep? If so, can you put mittens on his hands for sleeping to at least provide a cushion/barrier?

My thoughts will be with you and your family! Keep us posted! And I just sent you a FB friend request!

  • I hope everything goes smoothly tomorrow.  Sending thoughts and prayers.
  • I'll be thinking of you & him tomorrow!  I can imagine it being difficult keeping his hands from his eyes!  Poor kid.  :(

  • Sending lots of good vibes to you and DS. I hope you both have an easy time and he leaves his eyes alone.

Elizabeth just had surgery Thursday night for a broken arm and we're dealing with some of the same issues. We have to keep her quiet and calm until she gets her hard cast later this week and it's exhausting.

Let me know how that straight jacket idea works out :)

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

GOOD LUCK tomorrow!!!!  Plenty of easy surgery juju headed your way.

As for ideas?  Wow... that's tough.

I know when Jace first got his glasses the only thing that helped at all to keep his hands away from them and his face was distraction.

But... at 18 months there's only so much you can do to distract in a day.

Can he go to a park or splash pad or is that kinda thing out?

I know for us when he got tired and we were exhausted we put in a movie to give us all a break.

I realllllly wish they had a restraint device that worked for you.

I hope he heals up fast!!!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • Best of luck with the surgery. I hope this is his last one and that his eyes are corrected for good. I'm sorry about the eye rubbing constraints though. No advice, but lots of sympathy! Please let us know how it all goes tomorrow!
