cream colored couch - bad idea???

Am I crazy to get a cream-colored couch, even if it is stain resistant? Room and Board "Cameron" sofa in Vista natural fabric....not cheap, so I don't want to be hugely disappointed that it becomes a dirty mess. we'd use it in the living room, not den, so it might not get as much baby/toddler action that way?

Re: cream colored couch - bad idea???

  • In my opinion, it's the fabric that matters most, not the color! ?;)

We have a really nice micr-fiber couch in a very light beige color and it has held up perfectly in the last 2 1/2 years! ?I think with anything, you just have to treat any stains immediately.

  • I would not risk it! It probably looks gorgeous new but you will not be able to relax with it and it will soon look "grungy" even though it's a good fabric,.

  • We have a white couch that we inherited from my mom's place.  It's tough, but doable... I mean just be prepared that "stuff" will happen.  My daughter has smeared crayon on it, and wiped her mouth on it after she ate prunes for breakfast.  I mean all it takes is once with a pen.. (she's 19 months and super active).. just be careful.
  • We have a cream colored couch and it is THRASHED.  Granted, it's just a hand-me-down couch so we can't be asked to care too much.  And most of the damage is from us:  wine stains, coffee stains, dye from yarn, along with the child-assorted throw up, goo-handprint, what have you.

We've decided we're not spending money on GOOD furniture till we're a) done having kids and b) said kids are at least 10 or so.  Ikea will do just fine in the meantime.  And also, we probably wouldn't get cream anyway, because we're clumsy.  And I'd just spill red wine all over it within the first week.

  • I agree with pp about the type of fabric.  We don't have cream colored couches, but do have micro-fiber and it cleans up so well (especially with a toddler).  Although, even with micro-fiber, I still might be nervous about cream colored couches.
  • We hated our leather couches (hand me downs from my parents) until DD was born.  They are cream/tan and do show a fair amount of dirt.  But, since they're leather, they are very easy to clean off.  We will not be getting new couches until our youngest is 5/6, and then we will be in a house where food won't be allowed on the couches.
