Potty training question

Yes, I know we are super early on this potty training thing, but she's shown MAJOR interest in it, so I thought we'd give it a shot.  I'm not stressing about it at all, and I'm 99.9% convinced that she won't potty train this early, so I'm not making too much of an effort.

All we've done, at this point, is talk about the potty, get an Elmo Uses the Potty book, and show her what to do.

She will ask to go to the potty, but she's never done anything in it.  No pee, no poop.  I honestly think she has NO idea what she's supposed to do.  My DH and I have both sat her on the potty while we were using the potty, and let her listen to us tinkle, and she thinks that's super funny.

How do I get her to make the connection between what she does in her diaper, and what I want her to do on the potty?  So, far, I think that she thinks the potty is awesome because she gets to take her diaper off and sit on a chair, lol.

Any thoughts?  We're soooo not in a rush to do this, but I guess I would feel too guilty if I didn't take advantage of the opportunity.

Re: Potty training question

  • IMO, it's not too early, not one darn bit.

we did the "pppsssstttttt" sound when I went, and when she'd sit down. REALLY do it if she starts to pee. It just takes a while to train their brains to release those muscles. Ava STILL will make that sound if I kinda push her to go (like, we're leaving for the store, go try!!) and it does "pavlov" that pee right out. lol.

Never ask. Just take her. no big whoop if she doesn't go, say "nice try, maybe later" but WHOOP IT UP! if she does. It just takes a couple times of THAT and she'll be hooked. Once you think you want to go for it, ditch ALL diapers and pull ups, and just spend a weekend drinking and peeing and lining the bed with towels. Girls are pretty darn easy to train, I'm tellin' ya!

When she poops in her diaper, take her in there and show you dropping to poop IN the toilet, announcing that's where it goes. Matter of fact. Done. Bye poop!  whoo hoo!

I never bought diapers after Ava turned two. It CAN be done. She had times where she'd buck, and I did a lot of laundry that week. But we're the only society that keeps diapers on as long as we do.  Just have fun with it, and remind yourself that accidents happen, and it's JUST pee/poop. ;-)

Its so funny that you said that.  My DH is a super freak about some things, and spillage is one of those things.

I let her do more naked time than he is comfortable with, he's always worried to death that she'll pee in the floor.  I couldn't care less...its just pee, and I've been peed on by strangers, YKWIM.  I've tried to tell him a million times that urine is sterile, but he ain't having it, lol.

So, FINALLY, he saw her pee in the floor...and her pee is absolutely colorless an odorless because she drinks so much water.  He has loosened up significantly after that. I sure hope so that attitude sticks around, because I can't deal with potty training and him being a total freakazoid about a little tinkle in the floor, lol.

  • we are just starting training with hayden. I haven't gone hard core yet but am planning to right after the 4th of july. Hen i change his diaper, i take him to his cars potty and he tries to go. He has gone a few times and i acted like a crazy person. Last week i took him to Target and let him pick which big boy underwear he wanted. My thought was if he had underwear that he picked out he would be more motivated to want to do it.

  • Another "out of diapers by 20 months" mom here and I ditto everything Davez said.

As for getting her to finally go in the potty?

Our first catches were in the tub.  We actually put the portable potty into the bath tub and turned on the warm water at bath time.  We knew he peed every single night when he first got in the water.  Voila... a "catch" and then a TON of celebrating!

I was also lucky to have clock work poopers.

Is there any time of day when she goes reliably that you know about?  If so, capitalize on those times.

There are specific times she's more likely to go than others:

    1.  First thing upon waking.

    2.  20-30 minutes after consuming a fair amount of liquid

    3.  bath - warm water.

Try those times to see if you can encourage a catch and then celebrate like mad!

Another trick is to remove the diaper so she can see/feel when she does pee.  Summer is the perfect time for this so you can be outside and minimize clean ups.  Putting her in big girl underwear might also help her understand what she's feeling in those muscles when she does release so she can start making that connection.

    GL!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • We bought a couple packs of little panties and a couple of Blueberry training pants and put DD in these when I'm home.  She loves her panties and really dislikes pee running down her leg.  That has clued her into the fact that she is peeing.  DD won't, however, ever sit on a potty.  Not her Cars one, not her Bjorn one, not her froggy one and never ever the big one...so, I'm at an impasse right now but we're trying.  The panties so far have been key.
