Toddlers: 24 Months+

When is it time for a toddler bed?

Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times, but just curious if we could introduce the bed to DS now? He'll be 2 next month. He doesn't show any signs of wanting out of his crib, so should we just keep the status quo? thanks!

Re: When is it time for a toddler bed?

  • With DD#1 I planned to after her 2nd birthday even though there was no problem, but put the toddler bed in her room with the crib so she could get used to it around 21-22 months and that night she hopped in the toddler bed and that was that.  Not once was it a problem.

My twins are 2 in 3 weeks and I can't even begin to imagine them out of the cribs.

I think it also depends on your PT plans.  DD#1 was PTd by two and was beginning to get up at night to go.  One of my twins is PTing and her little butt is staying in dipes at night until she's 9 or so because I can not begin to fathom her toddling about with free range.

  • We made my daughter's crib into a toddler bed before she was 2. She was probably 18 or 19 months at the time. We had no problem with her trying to get out of her crib, but we made her a new room and decided just to start with the t bed. I think age 2 is a great time to transition. The first couple nights are rough on everyone, but it won't take long.

I would keep him in the crib until he tries to get out of it or he gets too big and looks like he might stand and tip himself out.  For us, this was a bit over 2.5.  We went straight to a regular twin.
  • We tried a simple transition, and it ended up being 3 sleepless nights.

We now know not only is DS not ready for the transition, but if we were to do the transition anyway, DH and I would need to tag team for three nights, get a gate at the door, take away the crib altogether, and deal with a lot of crying...

We decided, due to this, we use a crib tent.

  • Honestly, I think it depends on the child. My daughter, for example, is nowhere near ready for a toddler bed/twin and she'll be 3 in September. She won't stay in bed and will just wander. Naps will probably be completely non-existent. And I'm just not ready for that. She did try to climb out twice, but she's such a chicken and scared of just about everything, so she'd get stuck on top of the railing, instead of climbing down. We tried a crib tent, but she hated it. She hasn't attempted to escape in at least half a year and I'm not worried about that right now. For me, it's about peace of mind, knowing she's in her crib and won't go wandering about in the middle of the night or destroying her room.
  • We don't plan to transition DD until she is close to 3.  She's tiny for her age and can't climb out of her crib. She's happy in there and safe, so no need for us to move her to the big bed yet.  We did buy a toddler bed at a yard sale a few weeks ago and we have it set up in the basement, where DD plays, so she can get used to it.  We tell her that one day, when she's a big girl, she'll get to sleep in it.

  • I switched my daughter over at 15 months, no problem at all. The only issue it caused was that she was still in a crib at daycare so then she got mad when they put her in it at naptime, lol.
