Barefoot in grass?

Do you let LO run barefoot in your yard? I was always barefoot as a kid, but have not let R run barefoot!

Our grass is ok, not super plush but not bare either. I am so afraid he will step on something sharp (stick, rock, pricker), step on a bee, or burn his foot on the hot driveway. Not to mention the dirt factor! haha

When he plays in his pool/sprinkler he wears water shoes and I wear flip flops. If he is playing with his toys he wear socks/sneakers or toe covered sandals.

Do I need to ease up on the neurosis? =P

Re: Barefoot in grass?

  • I do.  My kid pushed her cars and trains up and down the driveway on her bare knees.  It still kills me a little on the inside, but I figure feet are no worse.  She also has water shoes/sandals that she wears outside too.  Or her sneakers.

I most of the time have her out their in the sandals or shoes.  But when I have the kiddie pool set up it is usually barefoot.  And she is usually in and out of that, alternating between pool, chalk, cars, running around like a nut.  She walks thru the wood chips bare foot too and doesn't seem to care.

Oh - and there is nothing cuter than little tiny wet footprints on the blacktop.

  • Hmmm, I actually haven't tried yet but Stella is still in the "I'm not really sure about this grass stuff yet" phase.  I think I will let her go barefoot when she's in her pool or sprinkler but I'm really paranoid about her getting stung by a bee so I'll try to keep shoes on her as much as she'll let me.

  • Evan doesn't like to be barefoot. If he happens to be in the pool w/out shoes and gets out he won't walk on the grass. He makes me carry him... he'll just stand there looking down at the grass and say "yuck momma" And if he is on the driveway w/out shoes he always says "hot", even if it's in the shade.
  • Yup, I don't have a problem with bare feet, especially in our yard. When we lived in a townhouse she always had shoes on but that's because they used fertilizers and there was sometimes dog poop on the grass. It's not like she goes barefoot a lot, because our patio gets hot and she doesn't like it. But we don't insist on her having shoes.
  • Eve has made it a non-issue as she refuses. It took her until the end of last summer before she would walk on grass AT ALL even with shoes on.. and even now sometimes if the grass is very wet and/or long she doesn't like to walk on it..

I was always the kid who had the wimpy feet so while the other kids were running around barefoot, I was tiptoeing around because it hurt my feet haha and I'd inevitably step in a pricker bush.

  • No matter how hard I try, I inevitably miss some dog poo when I clean it up, and without fail, A's sneakers always find it! I haven't let her go barefoot for that reason.  Plus we have some really huge trees in the back yard and tons of twigs fall from them, so that might hurt if she steps on them.
  • We do let him, but he prefers not to be bare foot.  He will run out with us barefoot after the sun goes down to help us water plants, etc.  Last week he did cut his foot, but it wasn't a huge deal.
  • we don't but that is b/c we have a gravel pit where the swingset used to be.  Plus I am sure there is dog poo somewhere in the yard. Dh is really good about picking it up but still.
  • Yeah all the time. She hates shoes on and will take them off so I gave up the fight. Knock on wood, we have yet to have an injury. But, if we go out front I insist on shoes b/c of the driveway. When I worked in early intervention I saw this little girl who was put out front by her baby sitter and she received 2nd and 3rd degree burns from the driveway. She was left out there for a while, complete neglect issue. But since then I don't let her or any of the kids I watch go out front w/o good shoes on.
