Stupid RV question...

I've never driven in an RV, but we are going to Montana for a week this summer and a friend has offered us hers.  It'll be me, DH, MIL and K.  This would make life so much easier as we are staying on DH's family ranch and would probably be in the bunkhouse if we don't have this. It's very very far from any hotels.

Anyways, my dumb question.  How do people transport their kids in RV's?  Do they roam free?  Carseat in back?  Carseat in front with airbag shut off?  Seriously, I feel like an idiot.  I am normally great about traffic laws, but I've got no clue on this one.

    Cam is going camping with her grandparents next weekend in their RV and I wondered the same thing! I didnt even think about it until yesterday!

    I've thought about this too.  DH always thinks it would be awesome to get an RV and roam the country.  ANd I keep reminding him that you're not going to be walking around and making mac n cheese while you're driving.  But he thinks you can.   My guess is that you're allowed to move around - like in a Greyhound bus right?  You can get up and go to the bathroom and you're not required to wear seatbelts.  But, the safety part of me says that kids will still die if they're thrown around in an accident even if the law says they don't need to be bolted down.   So yeah, I don't know.

    Just found this on line:

    One, you cannot put a carseat in a RV b/c the carseat manufacturer doesn't allow them to be put in "sideways". Secondly, where the seatbelts are on those seats, they are not into the frame of the RV...they are usually in a piece of wood which is not safe at all. The safest place for a child to travel, if there is just one in a carseat in a RV, is in the front seat. Sounds weird, but those seatbelts are in the frame of the RV. I, personally, would have someone follow the RV with the kids in their carseats in the vehicle.Source(s):

    My grandparents have always owned an RV, since before I can even remember. 

    I asked my mom how we usually traveled, when still needing car seats. She said that if we were still in the infant seat we sat in the front bucket seat strapped in. When we were in boosters or older, we were seat belted in on the "couch" or at the eating table with the seat belts. We were not allowed to get up unless we had to use the bathroom.

    Update: I think we're a no go on the RV.  I had originally agreed to borrow it thinking she had a camper, but then found out it's an actual RV.  I'm just too nervous about collisions and projectiles to take the risk.  The info out there doesn't make me feel any more confident about it. 

    So now, on to finding a camper to rent that we can tow!
