Car Seat Inserts

Quick question...

Do full term, healthy, average size newborns need the extra head support things that go into car seats? I have a few friends who have had babies and used them, but they all were born at 36 weeks or earlier, so I'm not sure...do I need one for my full term baby?

  • If they aren't for the car seat (as in manufactured for that seat) then you shouldn't use them no matter the size of the baby.  Seats haven't been crash tested with that insert and aren't safe (our NICU was very specific about it).  If it comes with the seat (like the chicco) then would still probably like it.  All newborns (full term or not) are floppy.

This precisely. My DS came home from the NICU at almost 7 lbs, which is pretty close to average for a newborn, and we used them. Just watch how your baby sits with it to make sure it's not too small. His carseat came with two and we only used the larger one. But yeah, don't buy any extra ones or install ones you got as a gift. The carseat meets safety regulations - the extra pads you can buy separately do not.

  • Assuming you mean the extra piece that comes with the car seat, yes they need it. You should consult your manual about when it needs to come out. My seat provided precise weight and height guidelines for when it needed to be used.

This.  Read the manual and it will tell you until how many pounds they need to keep it in there.

  • Thank you everyone! DH put the car seat and stroller together on his own, and I didn't realize that the head rest inside wasn't a standard part of the car seat, but was the newborn head support. Your advice is great...I'll be returning the random one I bought from Target since it's not safe!
