I'm sure this has been asked a lot. I went back through posts to see if I could find something helpful, but not so much.
I currently drive a Mazda3 and DH drives a Ford Focus. Does anyone else drive a smaller car? Will two car seats (one bucket and one convertible) fit? What do you do when you go away for a weekend or on vacation?
We're considering the option of trading in and getting a larger vehicle, but to be able to reasonably afford that we would likely need to trade in both cars. Anyone in a one car family? I'm just not sure if we could make that work.

maybe try buying something used? I have a friend with 2 in car seasts who drives a Focus, I don't think she has issues with 2 carseats.
I'm not in that situation. DH drives an Escalade with 3rd row seating so its essentially our 'minivan' (bought used this past fall), I drive a Ford Edge. We bought it brand new right before DD#1 was born and it seats 5 ppl, so essentially, it is a car in terms of seating, but cargo and leg space is pretty ample!
We were kind of a 1-car family until we bought DH's car. We had our Edge, and DH had a Mustang. It was almost impossible to fit a rear-facing carseat in the back. We would have had to have the passenger seat pushed all the way forward in order to fit the carseat. We took our Edge everywhere. We called that car Scarlett's car because DH and I worked opposite days and shifts, so whoever had baby got the proper car. That being said, would you be able to keep one car as like just a work/errands car and then get a bigger used car to use as more of a family car? Last year my car was getting fixed and my loaner was a Ford Fusion. That car had a HUGE trunk, and it would be more space in the back seat for the carseats. In my area, used ones are pretty reasonably priced.
I drive a mazda 3 and make it work. We have a graco snugride for the infant seat and the myride 65 RF for our toddler. When we mvoe DD to a convertible seat, I'm going with the sunshine kids radian, as it's supposed to be a more compact seat. However, it works for us because I don't work full time and have a really short commute (less than 5 minutes) to my PT job. If I were commuting everyday with 2 kids, I might be more inclined to upgrade sooner. At this point we'll upgrade if we decide on a 3rd child or when my 2 are closer to school aged. I'm loving all the extra money I can put into savings instead of putting it towards a car! When we take a long vacation that we'll drive over the next few years, we'll just rent a minvan. Much cheaper than a car payment.
My little Nissan Sentra is not going to work once #2 is here. It may work for some people, but for one reason or another I drive with the seat back fairly far, so NO carseat will fit behind the drivers seat! I've been wanting to sell my car anyway...so I'll either be driving a 4-runner or we'll be getting a new SUV.
Thanks for the info! I think this might be the best option for us, for now. Until we can get DH's car paid off, I think I'd rather stick it out (or suck it up). I don't think it would be too bad to rent a car for a couple of days or a week if we needed to, and you're right, in the long run it would be much cheaper than another car payment.
I drive a Honda Pilot.
I can't imagine having a smaller car. Mostly because we have a large dog and without the area in the back we wouldn't be able to take her anywhere anymore

No more TTC for us. We are done, and at peace, as a family of 4.

We are a one car family with a VW Jetta. We have DD RFing in an Evenflo Triumph behind the driver and come Sept will have a Graco SnugRide 32 behind the passenger. DH can drive comfortably, though it's a little bit of a snugger fit if he has to be the passenger.
We've been a one car family for 4 years. We've always lived 1.5 miles or less from DH's job so I just drive him to and from on days when I need the car. If I don't have plans to go out (driving at least) he just takes the car that day. We're moving about 2 blocks from his work so he'll be walking soon which will leave me the car more. It's worked out well for us so far.

We're expecting #4 so a car or SUV (other than a $$$$$$ $uburban) is not an option for us. We bought a VW Routan in Jan, when we found out I was pregnant.
Let me tell you, it was the best decision EVER. I miss my Volvo V70 like hell, but the sheer convenince of having a mini van out weighs whatever you may think people think of you. I don't have to crouch down to get my kids in or out of the car. The auto sliding doors allow me to get my kids in and out because someone with the big ass SUV parked too close to the white line. My daughter can get in and out on her own. When my hands are full of diaper bags and babies, the auto sliding doors are a God send. The storage is unparalleled. There's enough room in the back for the stroller and all the junk that comes with toting babies around town. We also have in floor board storage compartments which are AWESOME. Just can't say enough good things about owning a minivan.
People that have never owned a minivan are the only people that despise them. Honestly, I don't understand why people care so much about the image they think they're putting out by owning a minivan. People don't care nearly as much as you think.

I drive a Toyota 4Runner and DH drives a Honda Civic. It was a tight squeeze with DD's convertible and DS's infant carrier, but they did both fit. To be honest, a small car doesn't fit well with our lifestyle, but DH only really drives his car to and from work. We drive cars into the ground so we aren't in the market for another car for awhile, but if we were, I think we'd be buying either a Tahoe or an Acadia.
I'm not sure about being a 1-car family...I would always be paranoid that DH had the car and I'd need it for an emergency, like the ER or some other true situation requiring a vehicle.
As for being a one car family, I'm sure we could do it if we had to, but as a SAHM, I would go crazy if I didn't have a vehicle to take the kids out for activities during the week. I don't do well with being stuck at home and we live in a rural area so public transportation isn't an option.
