how long did you keep toddler in crib?

My son will be 2 1/2 at Christmas time and I wanted to get him this toddler bed st that comes with the bed/table and chairs and toy storage bin for him. Its Buzz lightyear and since his room is outer space it would look cute I think. Im just not sure if he will be ready for a toddler bed then. He still likes his crib and never has tried to climb out.

Has anyone kept their kid in a crib after 2.5?  I always hear about people putting them in toddler beds earlier. thanks

Re: how long did you keep toddler in crib?

  • My DS switched about a month after he turned 2, and DD was 12 months. Both of them were climbing/diving out though, so we moved them before they got hurt. They both did fine with the switch.

My oldest son moved into a twin bed right at 2 1/2. He had never tried to climb out of his crib but after sleeping in a bed on vacation he came home and didn't want to sleep in his crib anymore. It was the easiest transition ever.
  • Honestly, I wouldn't buy a toddler bed set.  He probably wouldn't be in it for that long!  I'd go right to a twin if you think he's ready by that age.  My kids were in regular beds at 3 years old.

  • We switched today. I am anxious about it but he has been climbing out for 2 months

  • We switched Carter at 13 months to a twin sized bed.  Casey just turned 1 and we aren't switching him anytime soon.  He just gets into way too much.

  • DS was in his crib until 3.5 and he got a nice twin then.

DD is 2.5 and in her crib with a crib tent. I don't trust her not to roam the house getting into quiet trouble.

  • DD was almost 3 when she was moved to a toddler bed (and then to a Queen bed at 4.25--due to a baby brother coming)

DS1 moved to DD's toddler bed  @ 2.25; thats when he started climbing and it was about the same time DS2 was born

  • I moved my older two at 18 and 19 mos (converted cribs to toddler beds).  The twins are almost 22 mos and still in cribs.  G climbed out Friday morning for the first time.... no fall!

If you are buying a new bed, I'd just go for a twin as well.  All that themed stuff is junk - pressed wood or plastic, made very cheaply, that they will surely outgrow (theme-wise) within a few months.  It will be much cheaper in the long run to buy a nice bed and theme bedding.

  • We went straight to a full size bed w/both kids around age 2.5-3.  Toddler beds are a waste of $$, IMO, because it's such a short period of time when you can use them.  If you're not wanting to go full size, then I'd put him straight into a twin.  You can get a rail if you're thinking he might need some protection from falling out.
  • DD1 was moved to a twin bed a little after 18 months and did great.

  • Both of my kids stayed in their cribs until 3 years old.  They were completely potty trained(day and nighttime) while still in their cribs too so being in the crib didn't get in the way of that either.  They were content in there so we figured there wasn't a reason to rush them out.
  • DS1 will be 3 in a month, and he's still in his crib. He loves it, sleeps great, and has never tried to climb out, so we're not messing with it yet!

  • Both DS1 and DS2 moved to a twin bed at 2 y/o, both times because we needed the crib. They both did fine, DS2 actually slept better with more room to move around.
