Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep Changes at 4 Months?

Anyone having issues with their LO deciding NOT to STTN?  In the past week or two, DS has decided to go to bed later than usual (typically 9pm-5/6am, then eat, and back to sleep until 9am).  He also decided to wake up wanting to eat every 2-3 hours after that.  It's like we have a newborn again.

Anyone else have a similar experience?  Teething?  Growth Spurt? What is causing this?

We have been traveling lately and thought the time zone changes + flights would have affected him, but that was well over a week ago and he's still having sleep issues.

HELP!

Re: Sleep Changes at 4 Months?

  • It sounds like 4-month wakeful period and is totally normal. In this time, babies go from newborn sleep pattern (deep then light) to adult (light then deep) so it is easy for them to wake up and then not go down like before because they get distracted out of the light sleep. It takes them awhile to get used to the new way of sleeping. Also, babies at this age go through an explosion of development and the world is just so exciting that they push through sleepiness to keep on looking, learning, interacting, etc.

  • 4 month wakeful period. It sucks. Tough it out for awhile and I'm sure he'll go back to his normal sleeping. It was about two weeks for us of her getting up multiple times a night again.

  • DS is definitely going though this!  I thought it was illness, vacation, and stopping daycare, but it's not getting any better now that he is well and we are at home.

    I feel your frustration!

  • Yes! Exact same thing over here. He was sleeping 7-9 hours straight and now started waking every 2-3 hours. I thought it was bc we moved him to his own room. Glad to hear we're not the only ones going through this!

  • My LO is sleeping fine during the night so far (although he is waking up about an hour earlier in the morning) but hardly sleeps during the day. He'll get fussy and I'm usually able to get him to nap in my arms but only for 20-30 min. It seems like he's only getting a couple hours of sleep during the day. I'm hoping this is the extent of the 4 mo. wakeful period...I think it's rough on both of us!

This is the most helpful, best explanation I've ever seen for 4mw.
