  I'm a big fan of shopping for parties at a craft supply store like Michael's.  I buy paint and wooden boxes and picture frames, or foam art kits, or really whatever fun crafts look age appropriate.  It's great because it's not just another toy (kids this age seem to be swimming in toys) and it gives mom or dad something to pull out on a rainy day or when they need a break- so it's a gift for them, too.

  I recently gave a 4 yr old a barbie (at the mom's suggestion). Unfortunately we couldn't stay for the whole party, so I don't know what else she got. It's been a few years, but I think when my niece was that age we gave her a doll with 'real' hair that she could brush, fix, etc & she liked it a lot. Age appropriate games & crafts are always good. Our flower girls were 4 when we got married & I gave them disney princess backpacks with a stuffed animal, a coloring book, crayons, etc in it & they really loved the backpacks. A little girl purse would probably be a hit too.
